♟️ About L’Échiquier Châlonnais

L’Échiquier Châlonnais is a major French chess club based in Châlons-en-Champagne, in the Marne department of the Grand Est region. Founded in 1946, the club celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2026. It welcomes children, adults, beginners, recreational players, experienced competitors, and titled players. Moreover, its activities extend beyond the main club venue through chess programs in several neighborhoods and nearby communities. The club maintains a large membership and participates actively in the French national competition structure. Claude Pogu serves as president, while Diego Salazar is the club’s principal operational contact and technical director.

🏆 Teams, Training and Social Programs

The club has built a strong national reputation through both elite competition and grassroots development. L’Échiquier Châlonnais won the French Club Championship in 2010 and has also competed at the highest levels of French adult, women’s, and junior team chess. Its program includes regular training sessions, youth coaching, adult chess, tournament preparation, training camps, and support for members who compete outside the region. In addition, the club develops community-focused initiatives such as Smart Girls, Chess Autisme Marne, activities for residents facing social isolation, and chess programs for young people in priority neighborhoods. Therefore, its work combines competitive performance with education, inclusion, women’s participation, and wider access to chess.
