ACS Harghita Chess Club is a chess association based in Miercurea Ciuc, Harghita County, Romania. The organization was established on October 4, 2018, and operates under the full legal name Asociația Clubul Sportiv Harghita Chess Club.

The club is affiliated with the Romanian Chess Federation and supports organized over-the-board chess for adult competitors, junior players, and local chess enthusiasts. Its members participate in standard, rapid, and blitz tournaments held across Romania, while several players also represent the organization in major national and international competitions.

ACS Harghita Chess Club promotes chess in Miercurea Ciuc and the wider Harghita County community. Its activities include tournament organization, competitive player participation, and projects designed to strengthen local performance chess. In addition, the association has received support through municipal and county sports programs for organizing events and helping its players attend national and international competitions.

Several experienced players represent ACS Harghita Chess Club in strong open tournaments throughout Romania. At the same time, the organization registers and supports younger competitors who are building their national and international ratings.

Attila K. Szabó is the principal public representative and tournament organizer associated with the club. He also competes actively and has represented ACS Harghita Chess Club at Romanian championship events, Grand Prix tournaments, and international opens.

🌍 Tournaments in Miercurea Ciuc

Tournament organization forms an important part of the association’s work. ACS Harghita Chess Club organizes FIDE-rated rapid competitions that welcome players from Harghita County and other parts of Romania.

One of its recurring events is the Új Év Kupa, or New Year Cup. The 2026 edition attracted 76 players from several Romanian cities and chess clubs. The tournament included adult competitors, junior categories, experienced rated players, and participants entering organized competition without an established international rating.

The club also organizes the Harghita Cup. The inaugural edition took place in Miercurea Ciuc in 2025 and was reported for FIDE Rapid rating. It brought together 70 participants in a seven-round Swiss-system competition.

The Harghita Cup 2026 – 2nd Edition takes place on September 13, 2026, at Casa Jakab Antal in Miercurea Ciuc. The tournament uses a seven-round rapid format and counts for both FIDE and Romanian Chess Federation rating. It also offers guaranteed cash prizes and separate awards for several rating categories.

Through these competitions, player participation, and local sports projects, ACS Harghita Chess Club continues to expand access to rated chess in Miercurea Ciuc and strengthen connections between players from across the region.
