Sortland Sjakklubb is an active chess club based in Sortland, Nordland, Norway. Founded in 1997, the organization serves players from Sortland, the wider Vesterålen region, and Lofoten. It has approximately 40 members and describes itself as the largest chess club in Vesterålen and Lofoten.

The club welcomes experienced competitors, recreational players, newcomers, and young players who want to gain practical over-the-board experience. Its members also include players who live elsewhere in Norway but maintain a connection with the Sortland chess community.

Håkon Natvig serves as the club’s chairman and principal contact. He has played a major role in developing organized chess in Sortland together with other long-standing club members and volunteers. The organization is registered as a Norwegian sports association and is affiliated with the national chess structure.

🏆 Club Activities and Competitive Chess

Sortland Sjakklubb organizes regular club evenings, internal championships, team matches, and open tournaments. Its program includes standard, rapid, and blitz chess, allowing members to participate in different formats throughout the season.

Internal events include FIDE-rated rapid and blitz championships. Club evenings also provide opportunities for friendly games, game analysis, tournament preparation, and presentations by experienced members. New players can take part alongside established competitors and gradually progress toward official tournament chess.

The club participates actively in regional team competitions. Sortland has entered several teams in championships involving clubs from Troms and northern Nordland. Its first team finished second in the 2025 Open District Team Championship, while developing players gained experience through the club’s additional teams.

Community activity also forms part of the organization’s work. Sortland Sjakklubb has cooperated with local cultural and youth institutions on beginner instruction and public chess evenings. In addition, it organizes informal social events, including open pub-chess sessions where adults can play or watch games in a relaxed setting.

The club also maintains an active website with tournament announcements, results, rating updates, photographs, and reports about members competing across Northern Norway. Through these activities, Sortland Sjakklubb connects serious competition with an accessible and social local chess environment.

🌍 Tournaments in Sortland

Tournament organization has been a central part of the club’s activities since 2012, when it held its first major weekend competition. Since then, Sortland Sjakklubb has welcomed participants from different parts of Norway to rated events in Sortland.

The club previously organized the Blåbyen Grand Prix and Blåbyen Open. These tournaments combined rapid and classical chess and became established events within the Northern Norwegian tournament program.

In 2025, the organization introduced the Open Northern Norwegian Blitz and Rapid Championships in Sortland. Following the success of that event, the club prepared another championship weekend for September 2026.

The Åpent Nordnorsk Mesterskap i Lyn- og Hurtigsjakk 2026 takes place at Samfunnssalen in central Sortland. The complete program includes 17 rounds of FIDE-rated blitz chess and nine rounds of FIDE-rated rapid chess. Players may enter either championship or compete in both events.

Sortland Sjakklubb manages the tournament schedule, registration, prizes, accommodation arrangements, and participant services. The club also provides a tournament canteen and works with a nearby hotel to create a practical setup for visiting players.

Through its regional team participation, internal competitions, community events, and major tournament weekends, Sortland Sjakklubb continues to strengthen organized chess in Vesterålen and across Northern Norway.
