♟️ About Sortland Sjakklubb

Sortland Sjakklubb is a chess club based in Sortland, Nordland, Norway, serving players from Sortland, Vesterålen, Lofoten, and other parts of Northern Norway. Founded in 1997, the club has grown into the largest chess club in the Vesterålen and Lofoten area, with approximately 40 members. Its activities combine competitive tournament chess with an informal and social club environment for experienced players, juniors, newcomers, and recreational players. The club organizes internal championships in classical, rapid, and blitz chess, participates in regional team competitions, and stages open weekend tournaments in Sortland. Some internal competitions are FIDE rated, giving local players regular opportunities to establish and improve international rapid and blitz ratings. Sortland also fields several teams in regional events, allowing both established competitors and developing players to gain practical tournament experience. Håkon Natvig is the current Chairman of Sortland Sjakklubb and the club’s principal public contact. He has been closely involved in the development of organized chess in Sortland for many years. The club’s principal current project is the Åpent Nordnorsk Mesterskap i Lyn- og Hurtigsjakk 2026, scheduled for September 11–13, 2026, at Samfunnssalen in central Sortland.

📜 Club Development and Activities

Sortland Sjakklubb was founded in 1997 and has developed into an established chess organization in northern Nordland. Its membership extends beyond Sortland itself, with players from communities throughout Vesterålen as well as members living elsewhere in Norway who retain ties with the club. A significant step in the club’s development came in 2012, when it organized its first major weekend tournament in Sortland. Since then, tournament organization has become an important part of its identity. Previous events have included the Blåbyen Grand Prix and Blåbyen Open, combining rapid and classical competition. The club also maintains internal championships and social chess activities throughout the season.

♜ Team Chess

Sortland competes actively in regional team chess. At the 2025 Open District Team Championship for Troms and Northern Nordland, the club entered three teams. Sortland 1 finished second among 12 participating teams after recording four match victories and only one defeat. The first team consisted of Martin Halsvik Larsen, Jon Fredrik Åsvang, Jonny Fredriksen, and Håkon Natvig. Åsvang was the team’s leading scorer with 4.5/5. Sortland 2 finished seventh, while the club’s third team gave several newer players their first experience of an away team tournament. This multi-team participation reflects the club’s effort to provide meaningful competition for players across different levels of experience.

🏆 Open Northern Norwegian Championships 2026

Sortland Sjakklubb is organizing the Åpent Nordnorsk Mesterskap i Lyn- og Hurtigsjakk 2026 from September 11–13, 2026. The club introduced the combined Open Northern Norwegian Blitz and Rapid Championship weekend in 2025 and is repeating the format after the successful first edition. The blitz championship will feature 17 rounds at 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move, while the rapid championship will use nine rounds at 15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. Both competitions are FIDE rated. The event will take place at Samfunnssalen in central Sortland, approximately 200 meters from Thon Hotel Sortland. The club has arranged discounted accommodation with the hotel and will operate a tournament canteen throughout the weekend. Cash prizes are offered for the top three overall finishers as well as rating-category and junior winners. Players may compete in either championship or participate in both for a total of 26 games across the weekend.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Håkon Natvig is the current Chairman of Sortland Sjakklubb. Current Norwegian organizational records continue to list him as Chair of the Board, alongside board members Werner Gitton Walter and Vladimir Shabalin. Natvig is also the club’s published contact for membership and general enquiries. Martin Halsvik Larsen is another particularly active figure in the club’s tournament communication and reporting and has been closely involved in promoting the 2026 Northern Norwegian championship weekend. The club maintains its official website with tournament announcements, results, rating information, event invitations, photographs, and reports from chess activity across Northern Norway.
