A.S.D. Circolo Scacchi Alekhine is a chess club, recognized chess school, and tournament organizer based in Aradeo, in the province of Lecce, Italy. Founded on April 25, 2005, the association grew from a group of parents, chess enthusiasts, and former members of Circolo Scacchi “Franco Mele” of Galatina. Its activities now include chess instruction, competitive play, school projects, youth development, team chess, and tournaments across the Salento area. The club operates from its premises on Via Scalfo in Aradeo and welcomes children, teenagers, adults, beginners, and experienced tournament players. During the school year, regular activities take place on Wednesday evenings, while summer programming includes Scacchi in Piazza sessions in local public spaces. Since 2012, the association has operated an FSI-recognized first- and second-level chess school, combining group courses, individual instruction, practical training, and preparation for official competition. Antonio Longo is the current President and the club’s principal public representative. The leadership team also includes Vice President and instructor Rodolfo Lategola, Treasurer and instructor Mattia Renna, and Sporting Director Luigi De Rosa. In 2026, Circolo Scacchi Alekhine continues an active program of youth tournaments, school chess, blitz, and rapid competition. Its principal upcoming event is the 20th Torneo Semilampo “Città di Neviano”, scheduled for August 30, 2026.

📜 History and Development

The origins of the club can be traced to chess courses organized for primary-school children during spring 2004. After those courses concluded with a tournament in June, families and local players wanted to create a permanent place where the children could continue playing. When Circolo Scacchi “Franco Mele” of Galatina subsequently closed, Mattia Renna of Neviano and Alberto Manta of Aradeo helped establish a new association. The founding assembly took place on April 25, 2005. The club quickly developed an educational focus. In 2006, it received the Memorial Salvatore Manco award in recognition of its work promoting chess. Over the following years, members progressed through national playing categories, while others qualified as chess instructors and arbiters.

🎓 Chess School and Youth Development

Youth chess remains central to Alekhine’s activities. The club’s chess school received formal first- and second-level recognition from the Italian Chess Federation in 2012. Its current instructor team includes Luigi Carlino, Paolo Minerba, Mattia Renna, Alberto Russo, Vittorio Vergine, and Lizeth T. Vasquez, with Luigi De Rosa serving as Sporting Director. The association has delivered chess courses at schools and community organizations in Aradeo, Neviano, Galatone, Seclì, Gallipoli, Copertino, Alessano, and other communities in the province of Lecce. These programs introduce children to chess before providing pathways toward youth championships and other organized competition.

🏆 Tournament and Competitive Chess

Circolo Scacchi Alekhine organizes classical, rapid, blitz, junior, school, and community chess events. Its calendar also includes recurring competitions such as the Garry Kasparov Blitz Tournament and summer chess activities in local squares. The 10th Garry Kasparov Blitz Tournament took place on June 14, 2026, continuing one of the association’s recurring speed-chess events. The club also promotes dedicated junior tournaments and supports members competing in Italian individual and team competitions. Alekhine participates in the Campionato Italiano a Squadre (CIS). Its recent team structure has included players such as Sergio Limongelli, Orlando Pino, Vittorio Vergine, Francesco Maggio, Luigi Carlino, Mattia Renna, and Antonio Longo.

⚡ 20th Torneo Semilampo “Città di Neviano”

The Torneo Semilampo “Città di Neviano” is one of the club’s longest-running public competitions. The series reaches its 20th edition in 2026. The tournament will take place on August 30, 2026, at Aula Polifunzionale on Via Dante in Neviano. Players will compete over seven Swiss-system rounds at a time control of 10 minutes plus five seconds per move. The event counts for FIDE Rapid rating and has a maximum capacity of 60 players. In addition to the main standings, the prize structure includes awards for several rating groups, junior players, women, and younger participants. The tournament is organized by A.S.D. Circolo Scacchi Alekhine with the patronage of Regione Puglia and the Municipality of Neviano, continuing the club’s longstanding connection with chess activity across the Salento region.
