Športový klub Bziny – Šachový oddiel is the chess section of Športový klub Bziny, a community sports association based in Bziny, in the Dolný Kubín District of northern Slovakia. The wider sports club was officially registered in 2019 and brings together local activities in football, table tennis, and chess. The chess section provides opportunities for adult players, juniors, experienced competitors, and local enthusiasts to participate in organized over-the-board chess. Its members represent Bziny in regional league matches and individual tournaments held across Slovakia. Players connected with the club regularly compete in classical, rapid, and blitz events. The organization is closely connected with the Municipality of Bziny, which supports local sporting and community activities. This cooperation allows the chess section to hold competitions at municipal venues and make organized chess accessible within a small regional community.

🏆 League Chess and Player Activity

Športový klub Bziny participates in Slovak regional team competition. Its players have represented the club in the 3rd League C1, competing against chess organizations from the Žilina and surrounding regions. The team includes players with a wide range of experience. Established competitors provide strength on the leading boards, while developing members gain practical experience through league matches and open tournaments. Club players also participate individually in competitions throughout Slovakia and occasionally in international events. The chess section supports different time controls. Its members appear regularly in standard, rapid, and blitz tournaments, which gives them opportunities to develop calculation, tournament discipline, practical decision-making, and experience against opponents from other clubs. In addition, younger players associated with Bziny take part in youth and open competitions. This combination of team chess, individual tournaments, and local events helps maintain an active chess community in the village and the wider Orava region.

🌍 Bzinský Zlatý Lev

The chess section’s principal public event is the Bzinský Zlatý Lev, organized together with Obec Bziny. The tournament series began in 2024 at the cultural house in Bziny. The first edition welcomed 36 participants from different parts of Slovakia, together with a player from the Czech Republic. Following the successful opening tournament, the organizers continued the series in 2025 and prepared a third edition for 2026. The 3rd Bzinský Zlatý Lev Rapid Chess Tournament takes place on August 29, 2026. It uses a nine-round Swiss system with a time control of 10 minutes plus three seconds per move. The event welcomes adult competitors, juniors, senior players, club members, and visitors from outside the region. Mgr. Pavol Druška serves as tournament director and coordinates participant communication. The organizing team also works with experienced arbiters and local volunteers. Cash prizes, trophies, category awards, refreshments, and a compact one-day schedule create an accessible tournament for players of different ages and strengths. Through regional league participation, individual competition, and the annual Bzinský Zlatý Lev, Športový klub Bziny – Šachový oddiel continues to develop organized chess in Bziny and strengthen connections with the wider Slovak chess community.
