Športový klub Bziny – šachový oddiel is the chess section of Športový klub Bziny, a community sports organization based in Bziny in the Dolný Kubín District of northern Slovakia. The parent sports club was established in 2019 and brings together football, table tennis, and chess. The chess section represents Bziny in Slovak team competitions and provides opportunities for local players to take part in classical, rapid, and blitz chess. The club combines league competition with individual tournament activity. Its players compete throughout the Orava and Žilina regions and elsewhere in Slovakia, while stronger members also appear regularly in national open tournaments. During the 2025–2026 season, ŠK Bziny competed in Slovak 2. liga C, finishing seventh among 12 teams. This represented a higher competitive level than the regional 3rd League in which the club had previously appeared. Peter Beňuš is listed as the current organizational contact for ŠK Bziny in the 2025–2026 regional club directory. Meanwhile, Mgr. Pavol Druška leads the organization of the club’s principal public tournament, the Bzinský Zlatý Lev. The third edition is scheduled for August 29, 2026, and is jointly organized by Športový klub Bziny and the Municipality of Bziny.

📜 Development of Chess in Bziny

Športový klub Bziny was formally established in March 2019, with chess incorporated as one of its sporting sections. The organization operates within a small village community but maintains regular links with the wider Slovak chess structure through league and tournament participation. The chess section benefits from cooperation with Obec Bziny, the local municipality. Municipal facilities are used for chess activities and tournaments, while local officials and volunteers have supported the organization of the club’s public events. This partnership became particularly visible with the launch of the Bzinský Zlatý Lev tournament in 2024. The event gave the club a recognizable annual competition of its own and attracted players from outside the immediate region.

♜ Team Chess

ŠK Bziny competed in 2. liga C during the 2025–2026 season, an eight-board team competition administered within the Slovak chess system. The club started strongly, defeating TJ Slovan Rajecké Teplice 6–2 and ŠK Mladosť Žilina 5–3 in its opening two rounds. It also recorded victories against ŠK CIV.SK Kremnica and PŠK Banská Bystrica during the season. After 11 matches, Bziny finished seventh with 14 match points and 39 game points. The result placed the team in the middle of a competitive group that included clubs from Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Detva, Kremnica, Fiľakovo, Čadca, and other parts of central and northern Slovakia. Experienced Bziny players appearing in recent competition include Anton Šingliar, Roman Hrnčiar, Peter Haluška, and Ľuboš Molnár, alongside other club members and developing players.

🏆 Bzinský Zlatý Lev

The Bzinský Zlatý Lev is the chess section’s principal annual tournament. Športový klub Bziny and Obec Bziny launched the event in 2024, when 36 players from different parts of Slovakia and the Czech Republic competed in the inaugural edition. Tomáš Brnušák won the first tournament with 7.5/9, while Anton Šingliar was the highest-finishing Bziny player. The event returned in 2025 with a stronger field that included several FIDE Masters and Candidate Masters. The 3rd Bzinský Zlatý Lev is scheduled for August 29, 2026 in Bziny. Tournament Director Pavol Druška oversees the event, while Peter Kučerík serves as Chief Arbiter. The tournament uses a nine-round Swiss system with a rapid time control of 10 minutes plus 3 seconds per move. The competition welcomes players across age and rating categories and includes separate awards for juniors and seniors. As a result, the tournament combines competitive rapid chess with a community-focused event that draws players to Bziny from across Slovakia and neighboring countries.
