Marijampolės šachmatų ir šaškių klubas „Sūduva“ is a chess and draughts association based in Marijampolė, Lithuania. The organization promotes over-the-board competition, supports local players, and represents the city in regional and national events.

The current association was officially registered in 1996. However, organized club chess in Marijampolė has a much longer tradition, and the community celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026. The club connects this historic legacy with modern tournament organization and participation in the Lithuanian chess system.

FM Rolandas Martinkus serves as the club’s president. He is also an experienced chess coach, player, and tournament director. Under his leadership, Sūduva continues to provide competitive opportunities for adults, junior players, and chess enthusiasts from Marijampolė and the wider Suvalkija region.

🏆 Competitive Chess and Club Activities

Sūduva participates regularly in Lithuanian team chess competitions. The club fields players in national and regional leagues and maintains an active presence in standard, rapid, and blitz events throughout Lithuania.

In 2026, the Marijampolės Sūduva team competed in the Lithuanian First League’s Southwest Zone. The team finished first in its regional group, demonstrating the club’s continued strength within competitive Lithuanian chess.

The organization also supports individual players who compete in national championships, international open tournaments, junior events, and rating competitions. Club members range from developing local players to experienced competitors with national and international titles.

In addition to team participation, Sūduva works with other chess clubs and sporting organizations in southern Lithuania. These partnerships help create regional leagues, qualification events, memorial tournaments, and other opportunities for regular over-the-board competition.

🌱 Youth Chess and Community Events

Youth chess development is an important part of the club’s work. Sūduva supports events for schoolchildren and young competitors, giving them opportunities to gain tournament experience in an organized and welcoming environment.

The club cooperates with Marijampolė Rotaract Club on an established annual children’s chess tournament. The event has reached twelve editions and regularly attracts young players from Marijampolė and other Lithuanian communities.

Sūduva also contributes to public sporting and cultural initiatives in the city. Its involvement helps introduce chess to new audiences while strengthening connections between players, families, schools, local institutions, and community organizations.

Through team chess, youth events, regional cooperation, and tournament organization, Marijampolės šachmatų ir šaškių klubas „Sūduva“ continues to preserve and develop the city’s long chess tradition.

🌍 Narvydas Antanas Bužas Memorial Tournament

One of the club’s principal international events is the Narvydas Antanas Bužas Memorial Rapid Chess Tournament. The competition honors Narvydas Antanas Bužas, a respected Marijampolė chess player, organizer, and supporter who lived from 1944 to 2015.

The club organizes the memorial together with Narvydas Antanas Bužas’s relatives. The tournament attracts local and international players and offers FIDE-rated rapid chess, live-board coverage, cash prizes, and awards for several age and rating categories.

The 2026 edition takes place at Mercure Marijampolė and also marks the centenary of organized club chess in the city. FM Rolandas Martinkus serves as tournament director, while National Arbiter Kęstutis Norkeliūnas serves as chief arbiter and registration contact.
