International Chess Holiday Prague is a long-running chess and cultural program based in the Czech Republic. It organizes an annual international chess holiday in Prague for players of different ages, nationalities, and playing strengths. The program combines organized over-the-board competition with accommodation, cultural visits, social activities, and services for accompanying family members.

Czech chess organizer Jaroslav Pelikán founded the International Chess Holiday in 1991. Pelikán worked as a foreign-language teacher and later as the headmaster of a secondary school in Český Brod. He devoted much of his free time to chess organization and youth development. His original idea was to create a holiday where players could enjoy balanced chess tournaments while their families joined a wider cultural program.

Following Jaroslav Pelikán’s death in 1997, the annual event continued as the Memorial of Prof. Jaroslav Pelikán. Jindra Kollerová-Pelikánová now manages the tournament and holiday arrangements. She coordinates registrations, accommodation, cultural activities, excursions, and communication with participants from the Czech Republic and abroad.

🏆 Chess Tournaments and Competition

The International Chess Holiday uses a distinctive closed-group tournament format. Organizers normally place players into balanced groups according to their playing strength. Most sections use an all-play-all system, which gives each participant a complete tournament schedule against opponents of a similar level.

The chess program includes classical tournaments for stronger competitors, master-candidate groups, sections for club players, rapid chess, and blitz tournaments. Selected groups count for FIDE rating, while other competitions follow the applicable Czech national rating requirements. This structure allows experienced competitors, developing players, juniors, seniors, and unrated participants to find an appropriate section.

The event has built a loyal international community over more than three decades. Many participants return repeatedly, while chess clubs and family groups travel together to Prague. In 2025, the program welcomed participants from nine countries and organized several classical round-robin groups, rapid competitions, and blitz tournaments.

🌍 Chess, Culture and Holiday Experience

International Chess Holiday Prague differs from a conventional open tournament because it combines chess and tourism within one coordinated program. Players can select a serious classical schedule or a lighter rapid option that leaves more time for sightseeing and other holiday activities.

The organizer prepares cultural visits in Prague and excursions to other destinations in the Czech Republic. Non-playing partners and relatives can join a separate activity program while the tournament rounds are in progress. Social events also give players, families, arbiters, and returning guests opportunities to meet outside the playing hall.

The 35th International Chess Holiday 2026 takes place over two consecutive one-week terms at Don Giovanni Hotel Prague. It also serves as the 28th Memorial of Prof. Jaroslav Pelikán. By keeping accommodation, tournament play, and many activities within one coordinated package, the organizer provides a practical chess holiday for individual players, families, juniors, seniors, and club groups.
