Schachclub Zürich Seebach is a chess club based in the Seebach district of Zürich, Switzerland. The organization was founded on November 16, 2017, initially under the name Felidae, a reference to the nearby Katzenbach. In October 2019, it adopted the Schachclub Zürich Seebach name. The club is affiliated with the Schweizerischer Schachbund and Zürcher Schachverband and meets at its permanent playing venue on Am Katzenbach. The club combines Swiss team competition with an especially strong focus on youth chess, training, social club life, and tournament organization. Its program includes weekly adult and junior sessions, the Seebach Open, Seebach Open U18, Seebach Weekend Open, Seebach & Friends events, and an outdoor team blitz tournament. Moreover, the club runs dedicated development programs for stronger juniors and for girls. Its tournament projects now reach hundreds of players each year. Felix Busch is the current President and principal organizational contact of Schachclub Zürich Seebach. Under the current leadership, youth development has become one of the club’s defining strengths. In 2025, the Swiss Youth Chess Foundation recognized Seebach for its work with young players. The 2026 season has already produced a Swiss U10 individual title and record participation in the Seebach Open U18. The club’s next major event is the 8th Seebach Open, scheduled for August 30, 2026 in Zürich.

📜 History and Development

Eight chess enthusiasts founded the organization in 2017 under the name Felidae. The club later changed its name to Schachclub Seebach in October 2019 and developed rapidly as organized chess expanded in northern Zürich. Membership growth became particularly notable during the early 2020s. The Schweizerischer Schachbund highlighted the club as the youngest chess organization in the city and documented its rapid growth from a small group into a substantial community of adult and junior players. A major influence during this period was Andreas Poncini, who served as President from 2021 and helped develop the club’s tournament program, permanent venue, youth activities, and social structure. Following his death, Felix Busch became President and continued the expansion of the organization. The club now meets at Am Katzenbach 10. Wednesday remains its principal club day, with children and juniors training before the adult club evening.

🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development

Youth chess is central to Schachclub Zürich Seebach. The program supports complete beginners as well as ambitious juniors competing at Swiss national level. One of its advanced initiatives is the Meisterkader, where the strongest Seebach juniors receive additional high-level coaching. In 2026, the club continued this program with GM Noël Studer, combining chess instruction with decision-making and sports-psychology concepts. The club also operates Seebach Chess Girls, a dedicated program designed to encourage girls to begin chess and remain active in the sport. The City of Zürich currently supports the initiative through its Atleta program. Prisca Koller coordinates the girls’ chess activities, while FIDE-certified trainer Viacheslav Dinerchtein leads instructional sessions. Competitive results reflect this development work. In May 2026, Robert Weis became Swiss U10 Champion at the final tournament of the Schweizer Jugend-Einzelmeisterschaft. In July, 14 Seebach players participated in the Swiss Individual Championships in Grächen, further demonstrating the depth of the club’s current junior program.

♜ Team Chess and Club Activity

Schachclub Zürich Seebach participates extensively in Swiss team competitions. In the 2026 Schweizerische Mannschaftsmeisterschaft, the first team competes in 2. Liga Zentral 2, while several additional Seebach squads play in lower divisions. The first team’s official home venue is Am Katzenbach 10. Antoni Kwiatkowski serves as the team contact in the current SMM competition. The club also fields several teams in the Schweizerische Gruppenmeisterschaft. This broad structure allows both experienced players and developing members to gain regular classical team-chess experience. Social activities complement competition. The club organizes shared meals, open club evenings, training sessions, outdoor events, and rapid and blitz tournaments. Therefore, its program combines serious tournament chess with an active community environment.

🏆 Seebach Tournament Program

Schachclub Zürich Seebach has developed one of the most active tournament programs among Zürich’s younger chess clubs. The 5th Seebach Open U18, held on May 3, 2026, attracted 163 registered junior players, a new event record. The competition was divided into Masters and Challengers sections and used seven Swiss-system rounds at 15 minutes + 5 seconds per move. The club also organizes an annual Open-Air Mannschaftsblitz. The fifth edition took place in June 2026 and used 15 rounds of team blitz chess. Its principal summer tournament is the 8th Seebach Open, scheduled for August 30, 2026 at Kirchgemeindehaus Höngg. The event consists of seven Swiss-system rapid rounds at 15+5 and is registered for FIDE Rapid rating. Separate A and B sections provide suitable competition for both stronger players and lower-rated or newer tournament participants. Later in the year, the club will organize another Seebach & Friends event and the Seebach Weekend Open, scheduled for October 16–18, 2026. Consequently, the club offers rapid, classical, junior, and team events throughout much of the year.
