♟️ About Schachfreunde Augsburg e.V.

Schachfreunde Augsburg e.V. is an active chess club based in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. The club began in 2012 with a small group of children in the Oberhausen district and developed into one of the region’s larger and more diverse chess communities. Today, it has more than 120 members ranging from young children to senior players. Its membership represents many national backgrounds, while the club also participates in Germany’s “Integration through Sport” program. Schachfreunde Augsburg provides six training groups arranged by playing strength, together with regular sessions led by experienced club players and titled guests. This structure allows beginners, developing juniors, experienced competitors, and ambitious tournament players to train within the same organization.

🏆 Teams, Training and Club Competitions

The club maintains an extensive program of adult and youth team chess. Its competitive structure includes several adult teams as well as teams in the U20, U16, U14, and U12 age categories. Schachfreunde Augsburg achieved a major youth success by winning the German U20 Team Championship in 2019. In addition, its senior teams have progressed through the regional and Bavarian league system. The club supplements league chess with regular internal and open events. These activities include youth club championships, blitz and rapid tournaments, Chess960 competitions, the monthly Monatseröffnung, and longer special formats such as the Superzelle twelve-hour blitz tournament. Training, game analysis, and tournament practice form an important part of the club’s approach to long-term player development.

🌍 Freundschachts Open and Tournament Organization

Schachfreunde Augsburg organizes the annual Freundschachts Open at the historic Wittelsbacher Schloss Friedberg near Augsburg. The club staged the first edition in 2023 and has developed the competition into an established regional international open. The tournament brings together titled players, club competitors, juniors, seniors, and recreational players from Germany and other countries. The 2026 edition features seven rounds of classical chess, FIDE and German DWZ rating, a maximum field of 160 players, and a €3,850 prize fund. The organizers place particular emphasis on a welcoming atmosphere, wooden chess sets, personal participant support, and a volunteer-operated bistro offering homemade meals and cakes. Through this event, the club aims to strengthen competitive chess in Augsburg, Swabia, Bavaria, and southern Germany while maintaining the community-focused character reflected in the tournament’s name.
