♟️ About the Greek Chess Federation
The Greek Chess Federation is the national governing body for chess in Greece. Founded in 1948 and headquartered in Athens, the federation represents Greek chess within the International Chess Federation. It coordinates the country’s organized chess structure through regional unions, affiliated clubs, committees, arbiters, trainers, and tournament organizers. Moreover, it maintains national regulations for competitions, player registration, ratings, transfers, national teams, arbitration, and club championships. The federation also supports Greece’s participation in international events, including Chess Olympiads, European championships, world championships, youth competitions, and other official team and individual tournaments.
🏆 National Championships and Tournament Organization
The Greek Chess Federation organizes and supervises a broad national competition program. Its principal events include the Greek Individual Championships, Greek Women’s Championship, National Team Championship, Greek Team Cup, youth and junior championships, school championships, rapid and blitz competitions, and qualification events. In addition, it publishes official tournament regulations and maintains Greece’s national rating and player-registration systems. The federation works with regional chess unions and local clubs to stage competitions throughout the country. It also cooperates with FIDE and the European Chess Union when Greece hosts international championships, seminars, and development initiatives. Professor Stathis Efstathopoulos was elected federation president in December 2024, while the current board includes officials responsible for competitions, national teams, school chess, development, integrity, and digital administration.
🌍 Chess Education and Development in Greece
Alongside competitive chess, the federation promotes chess as an educational and social activity. It has developed a national school-chess strategy and supported the integration of chess into educational programs. In May 2022, the Greek Ministry of Education approved chess teaching within the Skills Labs framework. The federation has since worked with schools, teachers, municipalities, regional organizations, and chess clubs to expand access to structured chess education. Furthermore, its national school championships attract large numbers of pupils and families. The 2026 championships in Thessaloniki welcomed approximately 1,600 students from 74 schools, including more than 1,200 participants in the individual competition. Through these programs, the Greek Chess Federation combines elite competition, grassroots participation, education, club development, and international representation.
