♟️ About China Student Sports Federation

China Student Sports Federation (CSSF), known in Chinese as 中国学生体育联合会, is the national organization responsible for organized student sport across schools, colleges, and universities in China. The federation operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and coordinates national competition, international representation, student-athlete development, and cooperation between educational institutions and sporting organizations. The present federation was formally established on March 20, 2024, when the China School Sports Federation and the Federation of University Sports of China merged into one organization. Therefore, CSSF combines the institutional experience of two organizations whose histories began in 1973 and 1975. The merger created a single structure covering student sport from school level through higher education. Today, CSSF manages a broad national competition system and represents China within major international student-sport organizations. Moreover, it works with national sports associations, universities, schools, provincial organizations, host cities, and international federations. Chess and other mind sports form part of this wider program, particularly through the federation’s university board-games structure.

🏆 National Student Sport

China Student Sports Federation coordinates an extensive program of national competitions involving educational institutions throughout China. Its activities cover numerous individual and team sports at school and university level. CSSF develops competition regulations, confirms eligibility requirements, supports tournament administration, coordinates national championships, and works with specialist national sports associations. The federation’s competition structure connects school and university sport with China’s broader national sporting system. Consequently, student-athletes can participate in structured competitions while continuing their formal education. CSSF also works with universities and local organizing committees when major championships take place in different regions of China. This decentralized model allows educational institutions to host national events while operating under common sporting and eligibility standards.

♟️ University Chess and Mind Sports

International chess is an established part of the CSSF university competition program. The federation works with the Chinese Chess Association to organize the National University Chess Championship. The competition provides Chinese university students with individual and team championship opportunities and brings together players representing higher-education institutions from across the country. The 2025 National University Chess Championship was jointly organized by China Student Sports Federation and the Chinese Chess Association. The University Board Games Branch of CSSF handled the event’s execution, while Shenzhen Chess Association served as the local organizer. The championship attracted players from leading Chinese universities and included separate men’s and women’s individual competitions together with team classifications. CSSF’s role continues in 2026. China’s official national competition framework lists both the 2026 National University Chess Championship and national middle-school chess championships as competitions jointly organized by China Student Sports Federation and the Chinese Chess Association. Therefore, CSSF provides an important connection between university chess, the educational system, and China’s national chess structure.

🌍 2026 FISU World University Championship Mind Sports

China Student Sports Federation is also a co-host of the 2026 FISU World University Championship Mind Sports, scheduled for October 11–16, 2026, in Liaocheng, Shandong Province. CSSF co-hosts the championship with the People’s Government of Liaocheng, under the international framework of the International University Sports Federation. The local Organizing Committee works closely with the Chinese Chess Association and Chinese Bridge Association. The championship combines chess and bridge. Its chess program includes separate men’s and women’s individual competitions, a mixed-team classification, and blitz chess. University delegations from around the world participate through their respective national university sports federations. Consequently, CSSF acts as the principal Chinese student-sport body linking FISU, the international delegations, Chinese sporting authorities, and the local host organization. The championship also continues China’s extensive experience in hosting international university sport, which includes World University Games and numerous FISU World University Championships.

🎓 University Board Games Development

CSSF operates a dedicated University Board Games Branch, which supports chess and other mind sports within Chinese higher education. The branch helps execute national student championships and works with universities and specialist sports associations. Its activities encompass international chess, Xiangqi, Go, and other board-game disciplines. For example, CSSF and the Chinese Go Association jointly organized the 2026 National University Go Championship at Zhejiang University. The event attracted 185 players from 47 universities. Similar cooperation exists in chess. Through this structure, universities gain access to nationally coordinated championships while specialist associations provide technical expertise and sporting regulations. As a result, CSSF helps position mind sports as part of organized university competition rather than purely extracurricular recreation.

🌐 International Student Sport

China Student Sports Federation represents China in several major international student-sport organizations. Its international relationships include the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and the International School Sport Federation (ISF). In addition, CSSF works within Asian university and school sport structures. China has participated extensively in international university and school competitions through CSSF and its predecessor organizations. Chinese student-athletes have competed in World University Games, World School Games, World University Championships, and numerous other international events. China has also hosted major international student competitions, including the 2001 Beijing Summer Universiade, 2009 Harbin Winter Universiade, 2011 Shenzhen Summer Universiade, and 2023 Chengdu FISU World University Games. Therefore, CSSF serves both a domestic and international role. It develops competition opportunities inside China while also managing institutional connections with the worldwide student-sport movement.

📜 History and Institutional Development

The modern China Student Sports Federation emerged from two long-established organizations. The China School Sports Federation was established in 1973, while the Federation of University Sports of China was established in 1975. For approximately five decades, the two bodies separately managed international and domestic sporting activities for school and university students. The university federation became a member of FISU in 1977. Meanwhile, both predecessor organizations developed extensive relationships with international and Asian student-sport bodies. A major institutional change took place on March 20, 2024. Nearly 300 delegates gathered in Beijing for the representative congress at which the two organizations officially merged to create the China Student Sports Federation. The new federation elected a 94-member board. Dr. Liu Lixin was elected President, while the organization began integrating the previous school and university sporting structures into one national federation. By 2026, the unified CSSF was coordinating competitions across the complete educational pathway while continuing China’s international representation in both university and school sport.
