♟️ About Tech Mahindra Global Chess League

Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, also known as TechM GCL, is an international professional chess league created as a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Its operating entity is Tech Mahindra Global Chess League AG, based in Opfikon, Switzerland. The league combines elite over-the-board chess with a franchise-based team model and technology-led presentation. It aims to develop chess as an accessible global spectator sport while introducing new audiences to leading players from around the world. The inaugural season took place in Dubai in 2023, followed by editions in London in 2024 and Mumbai in 2025. The fourth season is scheduled for Bengaluru, India, from September 3 to 13, 2026.

🏆 Professional Franchise Chess

The Global Chess League describes itself as the world’s first and largest official franchise chess league of its kind. Six franchises compete through a double round-robin system before the leading teams contest the championship match. Each franchise builds a six-player squad consisting of one Icon player, two Superstar Men, two Superstar Women, and one Prodigy. Therefore, established champions, leading female players, and emerging young talents compete together within the same team structure. Matches use a rapid time control and feature six boards played simultaneously. In addition, each franchise plays ten league-stage matches. This format places team strategy, squad balance, board order, and collective performance at the center of the competition.

🌍 Innovation and Global Chess Promotion

Tech Mahindra and FIDE use the league to combine professional chess with broadcasting, digital engagement, and emerging technology. The project has explored technology-enabled fan experiences involving artificial intelligence, interactive platforms, mobile applications, and enhanced live-event presentation. Moreover, the league works with commercial partners, franchise owners, broadcasters, digital platforms, and chess organizations to increase the international reach of the competition. Its wider initiatives include the GCL Contenders pathway, which creates opportunities for aspiring players to engage with the league’s competitive ecosystem. The organization also produces official news, player features, match coverage, videos, social-media content, and fan-oriented digital experiences. Peeyush Dubey serves as Chairperson of the Global Chess League and continues to represent the organization in its official communications ahead of Season 4.
