♟️ About Tech Mahindra Global Chess League

Tech Mahindra Global Chess League, also known as TechM GCL, is an international professional chess league created as a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and the International Chess Federation (FIDE). Its operating company, Tech Mahindra Global Chess League AG, is based in Opfikon, Switzerland. The organization aims to present elite chess through a modern franchise-based sports model while reaching audiences beyond traditional tournament chess. The league brings together many of the world’s leading grandmasters within mixed-gender professional teams. Each franchise features male players, female players, and a young prodigy competing together under the same team identity. Moreover, the competition uses rapid chess, live broadcasting, franchise ownership, player drafts, digital fan engagement, and technology-led presentation. Peeyush Dubey serves as Chairperson of the Global Chess League, while Gourav Rakshit serves as League Commissioner. The organization works closely with FIDE, Tech Mahindra, franchise owners, broadcasters, technology companies, sponsors, online chess platforms, and international players to develop the league as a global professional sports property.

🏆 Professional Franchise Chess

The Global Chess League describes itself as the world’s first and largest official franchise chess league of its kind. Six franchises compete in a double round-robin league stage. Each team plays ten matches before the leading teams progress to the championship stage. Every franchise consists of six players:

• 2 Superstar Men
• 2 Superstar Women
• 1 Prodigy

All six boards play simultaneously during each team match. Therefore, individual results contribute directly to a collective team score rather than producing only individual tournament standings. The format creates a different competitive environment from traditional open or round-robin chess. Team selection, board order, player form, franchise strategy, and collective scoring all influence the championship.

🌍 Global Chess League Seasons

The inaugural Global Chess League Season 1 took place in Dubai in 2023. Six franchise teams competed in the first edition, with Triveni Continental Kings becoming the inaugural champions. Season 2 moved to London in October 2024. The event took place at Friends House and concluded with PBG Alaskan Knights winning the championship. The league reached India for the first time with Season 3 in Mumbai in December 2025. Matches took place at the historic Royal Opera House, while Alpine APL Pipers won the championship after defeating Triveni Continental Kings in the final. The geographic progression from Dubai to London and then Mumbai reflects the league’s ambition to develop an international audience while moving between major global chess markets.

🇮🇳 Global Chess League Season 4

The fourth season of the Global Chess League takes place in Bengaluru, India, from September 3–13, 2026. Season 4 again features six professional franchises:

• Alpine APL Pipers

The 2026 player pool brings together world champions, World Cup winners, Olympiad medalists, established elite grandmasters, leading women players, and emerging talents. Magnus Carlsen returns to the Global Chess League for Season 4, while Divya Deshmukh makes her league debut. Other leading names in the player pool include Viswanathan Anand, Koneru Humpy, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Volodar Murzin, and Leon Luke Mendonca. The player draft allows franchises to build balanced six-player squads while retaining selected players from previous seasons.

🚀 GCL Contenders and Player Development

The Global Chess League has expanded beyond its invitation-only professional competition through GCL Contenders. The initiative creates an international pathway for aspiring players to interact with the GCL ecosystem. It includes online competition across male, female, and young-player categories and connects successful participants with the professional league environment. The program works in cooperation with Chess.com and uses online qualification stages, knockout rounds, and competitive opportunities linked to Global Chess League seasons. Consequently, GCL Contenders broadens the organization’s reach beyond established elite grandmasters. It also gives ambitious players and fans a stronger connection with the professional franchise competition.

💻 Technology and Fan Experience

Technology has formed part of the Global Chess League concept from its earliest development. Tech Mahindra and FIDE initially proposed using technologies including artificial intelligence, virtual reality, 5G, digital platforms, and interactive broadcasting to create new ways for spectators to experience chess. The league has continued developing this approach across successive seasons. For Season 3, for example, Global Chess League worked with Google Cloud on real-time player-performance analysis, AI and machine-learning dashboards, and enhanced broadcast information. The organization also works with Chess.com as an Official Platform Partner, giving online chess audiences additional access to league coverage and fan engagement. In addition, Global Chess League operates official social-media channels, online chess communities, digital fan programs, and supporting initiatives designed to make professional chess more accessible to spectators.

🤝 Tech Mahindra and FIDE Partnership

The Global Chess League originated from an idea announced by Tech Mahindra in February 2021. Five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand joined the project as mentor and advisor. Later that year, Tech Mahindra and FIDE signed an agreement to jointly develop the league. The partnership gave the project official recognition within international chess while combining FIDE’s sporting expertise with Tech Mahindra’s technology and business capabilities. A dedicated operating company, Tech Mahindra Global Chess League AG, was subsequently established in Switzerland. The first competitive season followed in 2023. Since then, the league has developed into an annual professional competition involving major international players, commercial franchises, global partners, broadcasters, and digital platforms.

⭐ Promoting Chess as a Spectator Sport

One of the principal objectives of the Global Chess League is to present chess in a format familiar to audiences of major professional team sports. Franchise identities allow supporters to follow teams across multiple seasons. Meanwhile, mixed squads create a structure in which elite male and female players compete together toward the same team result. Rapid time controls also make matches relatively compact. Furthermore, simultaneous boards produce several important games at once, creating changing match scores and team-level drama throughout each round. The league combines these sporting elements with live presentation, fan zones, commentary, digital analysis, player features, social content, and commercial partnerships. Therefore, Tech Mahindra Global Chess League represents a different model from a traditional chess tournament. Its central objective is to combine elite chess with professional team sport, technology, entertainment, and global fan engagement.
