♟️ About Šahovski klub Dubrovnik

Šahovski klub Dubrovnik is a historic chess club based in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Founded on October 20, 1933, it has maintained the city’s organized chess tradition for more than 90 years. The club brings together children, juniors, adult competitors, veterans, and recreational players while promoting chess throughout Dubrovnik and the wider Dubrovnik-Neretva County. The organization combines competitive team chess with a busy program of classical, rapid, and blitz tournaments. Its activities include the Open Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik Advent Open, Dubrovnik City Championship, seasonal rated tournaments, club championships, and senior and junior league competition. In 2026, the club continued to organize FIDE-rated events throughout the year from its base at Liechtensteinov put 12. Youth development is another central part of the club’s work. Škola šaha ŠK Dubrovnik provides structured chess instruction in three groups according to playing level, from first steps through preparation for competitive chess. Vlaho Zlošilo is the current President and represents the club during the 2022–2026 leadership term.

📜 History and Chess Tradition

Organized club chess in Dubrovnik officially dates to 1933, when local chess enthusiasts established a chess club at the Dubravka café in Pile. Filip Smolčić became the first President, with Ćiril Prelovec serving as Secretary. The original objective was simple: to develop and popularize chess in Dubrovnik. The city’s connection with chess is considerably older, but 1933 marks the beginning of the documented organized club structure that continues through today’s Šahovski klub Dubrovnik. The club has since become an important part of Dubrovnik’s sporting heritage, combining this long tradition with modern league competition, tournament organization, and systematic work with young players.

♜ Competitive Chess

Šahovski klub Dubrovnik participates in official Croatian team competitions with both senior and junior teams. Its current competitive program includes senior league teams as well as 2. HŠL Jug junior competition, cadet competition, and women’s league activity. Therefore, younger players can progress from the club’s chess school into organized team competition. The club also organizes frequent individual events. Its 2026 calendar includes the Dubrovnik City Championship, rapid tournaments, summer standard chess, the club championship, and seasonal blitz competitions. The 64th Dubrovnik City Championship was played from February 27 to March 8, 2026 at the club premises, continuing another long-standing local chess tradition.

🎓 Chess School and Youth Development

The club’s Chess School is designed for children and young players at different stages of development. Training is divided into three groups according to chess knowledge and experience. Beginners learn the fundamentals, while more advanced students develop their calculation, strategy, practical skills, and tournament preparation. The club also supports participation in county and national youth championships. In June 2026, its premises hosted the Dubrovnik-Neretva County Individual Junior Championship, with ŠK Dubrovnik acting as technical organizer. Through regular training and competition, the club provides a pathway from introductory chess to serious junior tournament play.

⚡ Open Dubrovnik

The Open Dubrovnik is one of the club’s best-known annual competitions. The 16th International Rapid Chess Tournament Open Dubrovnik took place on February 7, 2026 at the Student Centre Dubrovnik. The tournament was organized in connection with celebrations honoring Saint Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik. The event attracted 106 players from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro, including Grandmasters and other titled competitors. Players contested nine FIDE-rated rapid rounds at 10 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move. FM Armin Mušović won the 2026 tournament.

🌍 Dubrovnik Advent Open

The Dubrovnik Advent Open has become the club’s principal international classical tournament. The 4th Dubrovnik Advent Open takes place from December 17–20, 2026 at the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. The tournament consists of seven FIDE-rated classical rounds and is open to players with a standard FIDE rating below 2400. The time control is 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The 2026 event offers a €7,500 net prize fund. Ivan Potrebica serves as Tournament Director, while International Arbiter Sulejman Islamović is Chief Arbiter.
