📜 History and Development

Anaitasuna-Kakute Xake Taldea was founded in 1979. In its early years, the organization was known as Anaitasuna Berri, while the present Anaitasuna-Kakute name developed later. One of the most remarkable episodes in the club’s early history came in 1982. Local player José Luis Larrañaga Aldalur attempted a world endurance record for simultaneous chess as part of an initiative organized by the newly established club. He played for 31 hours and 42 minutes, completing 605 games. The project helped introduce the club and organized chess to a much wider local and regional audience. Since then, Anaitasuna-Kakute has developed numerous chess projects in Azkoitia. Its activities have expanded from federated competition into junior education, school chess, community tournaments, women’s chess, rapid and blitz events, and collaborations with other clubs and public institutions.

🎓 Anai Xake Eskola and Youth Development

Youth chess is one of the principal areas of the club’s work. The Anai Xake Eskola provides structured chess instruction throughout the year, with regular courses running during the school season. The club also organizes practical competitions for young players. In January 2026, Azkoitia hosted a zonal qualifying competition for the Gipuzkoa school chess championships. Later, on June 14, Anaitasuna-Kakute joined the Azkoitiko Udala and Gros Xake Taldea in organizing Azkoitia Sustapena 2026. The Sustapena tournament featured separate U20, U14, and U12 sections and had an overall capacity of up to 160 players. Consequently, developing players could compete against others of similar ages while gaining experience in a structured tournament environment. In addition, the club has adopted a formal child and adolescent protection protocol. Asier Plazaola Urbieta serves as the designated person responsible for child and adolescent safeguarding within club activities.

🏆 Tournament and Competitive Activity

Anaitasuna-Kakute maintains one of the most varied annual chess calendars in its local area. The program combines internal competitions with open tournaments that attract players and teams from elsewhere in Gipuzkoa and the Basque Country. On June 28, 2026, the club organized the XLIV Azkoitia Hiria Txapelketa / XLIV Villa de Azkoitia – XV Memorial Joxe Azkue. Reaching 44 editions demonstrates the continuity of the competition and its importance within the club’s tournament tradition. The club also participates in the 2026 Gipuzkoa team league, giving members regular federated team competition. Its wider calendar includes Copa Anaitasuna, Anai Blitz, women’s competitions, veteran events, school chess, the Villa de Azkoitia Infantil, and social tournaments. This combination of training and frequent competition allows members to remain active throughout the year. Moreover, it gives younger players a practical route from the chess school into organized club and federation events.

🌟 XXXI San Andrés Azkoitia 2026

The XXXI San Andrés Azkoitia is scheduled for November 28, 2026 and continues one of Anaitasuna-Kakute’s best-established annual tournament traditions. The San Andrés event is organized as part of the local celebrations in Azkoitia and has developed into a large individual chess competition. The current 2026 registration structure allows a maximum of 189 players, while special categories include younger competitors, veterans, club members, and other classifications defined by the organizers. The tournament is closely connected with the Azkoitiko Udala and receives support from a range of local and regional partners. Club President José Luis Fernández remains the principal organizational contact for registrations and tournament information. Through the San Andrés tournament, Villa de Azkoitia, Sustapena events, and its extensive school program, Anaitasuna-Kakute continues a chess tradition that has developed in Azkoitia since 1979.
