LBX Sul de Minas

♟️ About LBX Sul de Minas

LBX Sul de Minas is the regional tournament network of the Liga Brasileira de Xadrez (LBX) serving southern Minas Gerais and neighboring areas of Brazil. Its activities extend through Sul de Minas, Campo das Vertentes and Zona da Mata, where the organization works with municipalities, schools, sports departments, chess projects and local organizers to stage accessible over-the-board competitions. The regional program is coordinated by Nelson Roberto “Beto” Meirelles, who appears consistently as the organizer and principal contact for Copa LBX Sul de Minas events. Moreover, he works with host cities to coordinate tournament venues, registrations, equipment, categories, prizes, pairings and local partnerships. Chess-Results and the national LBX calendar continue to identify Beto Meirelles as the organizer of the regional circuit in 2026. LBX Sul de Minas places particular emphasis on bringing children, adults, seniors and families into the same chess environment. Its competitions include categories for U7, U9, U11, U14, U17 and U20 players alongside Adult, Master, Senior, Veteran and Parents divisions. Therefore, the circuit provides regular competitive opportunities for players across several generations rather than focusing only on experienced tournament competitors.

🏆 Copa LBX Sul de Minas

The principal competition organized by LBX Sul de Minas is the Copa LBX Sul de Minas, a multi-stage rapid chess circuit held in different municipalities across the region. Documented Copa LBX Sul de Minas events date back at least to 2023. During that season, qualifying tournaments took place in communities including Soledade de Minas, Pouso Alegre, Paraguaçu, São Lourenço, Jesuânia and Caxambu before the regional final. The circuit expanded further during 2024 and 2025, with tournaments staged in cities such as Baependi, São Vicente de Minas, Itanhandu, Conceição do Rio Verde and Três Corações. Each host city gives local players an opportunity to compete close to home. Moreover, successful participants can qualify for the end-of-season final, where the leading players from earlier stages meet for the regional championship.

The 2026 regional calendar is particularly extensive. Tournament results published by LBX Sul de Minas include stages in:

• Recanto da Mata / Baependi
• Andrelândia
• Pouso Alegre
• Baependi
• Bom Jardim de Minas
• Paraguaçu
• Liberdade
• Minduri
• Santana da Vargem

Additional 2026 events include the Copa Cruzília de Xadrez, Copa Cambuquira de Xadrez, competitions within the Circuito LBX Vertentes da Mata, and the season-ending Copa LBX Sul de Minas final. Chess-Results records continue to identify Beto Meirelles as the creator and organizer of these competitions. Consequently, the regional circuit provides one of the most active recurring rapid-chess programs in this part of Minas Gerais.

🎓 Junior and School Chess

Youth participation is central to the LBX Sul de Minas format. Instead of grouping all young players into a single junior category, the circuit separates competitors into several age groups. This structure gives younger children a better opportunity to play against opponents at a similar stage of development. The tournaments also cooperate with schools, municipal sports projects, teachers and local chess initiatives. Several stages recognize not only individual players but also municipalities, teachers and participating teams. Moreover, parents can compete in their own category. This creates an unusual family-oriented tournament environment where children and adults can participate at the same event. The wider LBX philosophy supports this approach. The national organization does not charge players fees to maintain an LBX rating and states that its objective is to make organized chess more accessible throughout Brazil.

👥 Adult, Senior and Veteran Chess

LBX Sul de Minas does not limit its development work to junior players. Its tournament structure includes categories for adults as well as Master, Senior and Veteran players. Therefore, experienced competitors can remain active within the same circuit as younger generations. Many stages divide the field into rating or age blocks while still maintaining overall standings. This system allows stronger players to compete for general prizes while giving developing and older competitors additional category objectives. Separate women’s classifications also feature prominently throughout the circuit. The official regional website maintains both male and female ranking tables, while many tournaments provide dedicated prizes for leading female competitors. As a result, LBX Sul de Minas promotes chess as a sport that players can continue throughout their lives.

📊 Rankings, Results and Live Games

The organization maintains a dedicated regional website with an extensive archive of tournament information. Players can consult current rankings, historical results, tournament calendars, photo galleries and registration information. The archive includes results from the 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 seasons. LBX Sul de Minas has also expanded its use of live-board technology. Games from several tournaments have been transmitted through platforms such as idChess and Lichess. This coverage allows families, coaches and chess supporters to follow leading games remotely. Furthermore, it gives regional competitors experience with electronic boards and online tournament coverage more commonly associated with larger events.

🤝 Municipal and Regional Cooperation

A defining characteristic of LBX Sul de Minas is its cooperation with local host organizations. Rather than using one permanent tournament hall, the circuit moves between different municipalities. Local sports departments, schools, chess projects and community organizations provide venues and logistical support, while the LBX regional team coordinates the competitive framework. For example, earlier tournaments have received support from municipal authorities in Soledade de Minas, Conceição do Rio Verde, Itanhandu and other host communities. This decentralized structure allows the circuit to reach players who might otherwise need to travel considerable distances for organized chess. Consequently, LBX Sul de Minas functions both as a tournament organizer and as a regional network connecting chess communities throughout southern Minas Gerais.

📜 Connection with Liga Brasileira de Xadrez

LBX Sul de Minas operates within the wider Liga Brasileira de Xadrez structure. The national LBX was founded on September 21, 2013 with the objective of making competitive chess more accessible across Brazil. It operates as a non-profit civil organization and maintains its own national rating and title system. LBX provides ratings for Standard, Rapid and Blitz chess while allowing registered players to maintain their ratings without annual fees. Furthermore, the organization sanctions tournaments across numerous Brazilian states. The Sul de Minas circuit applies this national structure at regional level. Players therefore receive organized competition while also entering the wider LBX rating network. Since at least 2023, the Copa LBX Sul de Minas has developed into an increasingly extensive annual circuit. Its combination of regional travel, youth categories, adult competition, municipal cooperation and accessible ratings gives the organization a distinctive role within chess in Minas Gerais.
