♟️ About SK Ottenschlag
SK Ottenschlag, also known as Schachklub Ottenschlag, is an active chess club based in Ottenschlag in Lower Austria’s Waldviertel region. The club welcomes children, junior players, adults, experienced competitors, and recreational chess enthusiasts. It combines regular club activities with league participation, youth development, and ambitious public tournaments.
The club joined the organized Lower Austrian chess structure in 2023. Since then, it has quickly established itself as an energetic part of regional chess. SK Ottenschlag is affiliated with the Lower Austrian Chess Federation and competes within the Waldviertel chess district. It also operates as the chess section presented through SPORTUNION Ottenschlag.
Alexander Spritzendorfer serves as chairman of SK Ottenschlag and leads the chess section. He also works as a regional chess arbiter and holds a leading role within Waldviertel chess administration. Therefore, the club benefits from his experience in competition management, tournament organization, youth training, and regional cooperation.
🏆 Tournaments and Schach im Turm
SK Ottenschlag is best known for organizing the Schach im Turm tournament series. The project brings competitive chess into distinctive historic venues and combines sport, culture, tourism, and professional presentation.
The first editions took place at Schloss Ottenschlag. The program included rapid chess, blitz tournaments, junior competitions, and the Lower Austrian Rapid Chess Championship. Moreover, the organizer introduced live boards, online broadcasts, expert commentary, photographs, and extensive event coverage. Almost 100 registrations were recorded across the 2023 rapid and blitz competitions.
The series later expanded beyond Ottenschlag. SK Ottenschlag has organized Schach im Turm events in locations such as Dürnstein and the historic Südbahnhotel at Semmering. These competitions have attracted titled players, strong Austrian competitors, international participants, junior players, and chess personalities.
The 2025 Rudolf Spielmann Memorial at Semmering welcomed around 140 participants. The program featured three rating and age-based groups, live transmission, and commentary from leading Austrian players. In addition, the club continues to organize rapid and blitz tournaments under the Schach im Turm name.
🎓 Junior Chess and Club Activities
Youth development forms an important part of SK Ottenschlag’s work. The club provides training and tournament opportunities for young players from Ottenschlag and the wider Waldviertel region. Several club juniors have competed successfully in regional events and open youth tournaments.
Junior sections regularly accompany the club’s major competitions. As a result, children can gain tournament experience in an environment designed for their age and playing level. They can also watch strong players, follow live commentary, and become part of a broader chess community.
The club holds its regular chess evening every Monday from 17:00 at Café-Konditorei Matschiner in Ottenschlag. Interested players can visit the club, meet its members, and take part in games and training. Therefore, SK Ottenschlag supports both formal competition and informal community chess.
🤝 Regional Competition and Chess Development
SK Ottenschlag participates in the Waldviertel team championship and other Lower Austrian competitions. In 2026, the club won the Waldviertel 1. Klasse team title. This achievement marked an important milestone for a relatively young association and reflected its steady competitive development.
The club also supports regional championships and cooperates with the Lower Austrian Chess Federation, neighboring clubs, municipalities, historic venues, sponsors, arbiters, commentators, and media partners. Alexander Spritzendorfer has also served as chairman of the Waldviertel chess clubs, strengthening the club’s connection with regional chess administration.
Through its tournaments, junior work, team participation, and distinctive event concepts, SK Ottenschlag contributes to the visibility of chess in rural Lower Austria. The club has built a recognizable identity by combining serious competition with welcoming events and memorable venues.
