♟️ About the Organizer

Schachclub ML Kastellaun e.V., commonly known as SC ML Kastellaun, is an active chess club based in Kastellaun, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

The present association was founded in February 2019. However, its roots lie in the former Spielgemeinschaft Mörsdorf-Lahr. The letters ML preserve this connection with the club’s earlier regional identity.

The organization welcomes children, adults, beginners, recreational players, and experienced tournament competitors. Members can attend weekly training, play informal games, enter club competitions, and represent Kastellaun in regional leagues.

Andreas Englert serves as Chairman of the club. He is also involved in chess instruction and school chess activities at IGS Kastellaun.

Regular beginner training takes place on Friday afternoons, followed by the main club evening. Therefore, new players can first learn the fundamentals before progressing into the club’s general training and competitive program.

🏆 Tournaments and Team Chess

SC ML Kastellaun organizes classical, rapid, and junior chess competitions. Its tournament program includes open events, club competitions, youth tournaments, and regional championships.

One of its principal events is the Hunsrück Schnellschachopen. The competition welcomes adult and junior players from different clubs and playing levels.

The 2nd Hunsrück Schnellschachopen takes place on September 26, 2026, at IGS Kastellaun. Participants complete seven Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 10 minutes plus five seconds per move.

The tournament offers cash prizes for the leading players and separate awards for junior participants. Moreover, several youth age categories receive dedicated trophies.

The club also organizes the recurring Hunsrück Jugendopen. This established competition includes separate age classifications and attracts children and teenagers from Rhineland-Palatinate and neighboring regions.

Team chess forms another important part of the organization’s activities. SC ML Kastellaun enters several teams in regional competitions. As a result, members of different strengths can gain regular experience in longer competitive games.

🌱 Junior Chess and Community Development

Youth development is one of the club’s main priorities. Several trainers and volunteers support children during beginner sessions, advanced training, team matches, and individual tournaments.

The club maintains close links with local schools. Chess activities take place at IGS Kastellaun and a local primary school, helping pupils discover the game within a familiar educational setting.

Young members regularly participate in district, Rhineland-Palatinate, and German youth championships. Club players have achieved strong results at state and national level, including individual titles and appearances at the German Youth Championships.

The club’s training structure gives juniors a clear development pathway. Beginners can first learn the rules and basic tactics. Afterward, they can progress into rated tournaments, youth teams, and adult league competition.

SC ML Kastellaun also promotes chess through public events, school cooperation, online activities, and tournaments at IGS Kastellaun. Through this work, the club supports an active chess community in Kastellaun and the wider Hunsrück region.
