📜 Development of Svarta Hästen SK

The chess club grew out of the Svarta Hästen chess-and-social venue created by entrepreneur Joel Ighe. The Stockholm location opened in 2023 at Biblioteksgatan 21 near Stureplan, introducing a concept built around custom chess tables, social play, lessons, food, and drinks. In 2024, Carl Fredrik Johansson established Svarta Hästen SK as an organized chess club. The aim was to create a bridge between informal chess and traditional club competition, particularly for adults who might find established tournament chess difficult to enter. The concept expanded geographically in November 2025, when Svarta Hästen opened a second venue at Dicksonska Palatset in Gothenburg. Tournament activity has subsequently expanded there as well, giving the club a presence beyond Stockholm.

Svarta Hästen SK organizes competition across several formats. Its 2026 Club Championship was registered as a six-round Swiss-system tournament at Biblioteksgatan 21, with Carl Fredrik Johansson as Chief Arbiter. The championship used a classical time control of 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move and was submitted for FIDE rating. Another Queen’s Gambit event is already scheduled for December. In Gothenburg, the club organizes Amatördragen på Svarta Hästen, a rapid series aimed at amateur players. The third 2026 event took place on August 22, while another edition is scheduled for October 3, 2026. These initiatives complement the club’s broader beginner-friendly approach and provide tournament opportunities for players who may not yet consider themselves experienced competitive chess players.
