ŠKM Liptovský Hrádok is the chess section of Športový klub mesta Liptovský Hrádok, the municipal sports club of Liptovský Hrádok in northern Slovakia. The parent organization also supports football, volleyball, karate, tourism, and other sports, while its chess section represents the town in organized Slovak chess. The club’s activities include rated tournament play, regional team competition, and cooperation with other chess organizations in the Liptov region. The chess section brings together experienced competitors, seniors, juniors, and developing players. Its members appear regularly in Slovak team leagues and individual events, while the club also stages its own annual rapid tournament. Recent club players include Martin Bobák, Ladislav Staroň, Slavomír Slošiar, Adam Slošiar, Vladimír Slošiar, Ľubomír Tréger, and Ján Zeman. In addition, the organization works closely with the wider Liptov chess community, including experienced arbiters and officials. Ján Zeman is the principal current tournament organizer associated with ŠKM Liptovský Hrádok and serves as Tournament Director of its flagship Pohár primátora mesta Liptovský Hrádok. The 12th edition is now scheduled for September 19, 2026, following a change from its originally announced September 12 date. Karol Pekár serves as Chief Arbiter.

🏆 Pohár primátora mesta Liptovský Hrádok

The Pohár primátora mesta Liptovský Hrádok, or Mayor’s Cup of Liptovský Hrádok, is the chess section’s principal annual tournament. The event has developed into a regular meeting point for players from the Liptov region and other parts of Slovakia, while competitors from neighboring countries also participate. The 2025 edition, held on September 20, attracted 67 players. Its starting field included IM Juraj Druska and GM Mikuláš Maník, alongside strong club players, juniors, seniors, and several representatives of ŠKM Liptovský Hrádok itself. The tournament therefore combines competitive rapid chess with a community format that remains accessible across a wide range of ratings and ages.

⚡ 12th Mayor’s Cup 2026

The 12th Pohár primátora mesta Liptovský Hrádok will take place on September 19, 2026 at the Dom kultúry in Liptovský Hrádok. The organizers moved the tournament from September 12 because of a calendar clash with other Slovak events. Players will compete over seven Swiss-system rounds at a time control of 15 minutes plus five seconds per move. The results will count toward both the Slovak national rating and FIDE Rapid rating. Ján Zeman serves as Tournament Director, while Karol Pekár is Chief Arbiter. The entry list already includes players from Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and the registration deadline is September 17.

ŠKM Liptovský Hrádok has a long connection with organized team chess in northern Slovakia. Historical Slovak Chess Federation records show teams from Liptovský Hrádok competing at national and regional levels for decades, including under the former Tesla Liptovský Hrádok name. Today, the chess section continues to provide local players with a club affiliation for rated competition. Its members participate in tournaments throughout Slovakia and maintain links with the broader network of clubs around Liptovský Mikuláš, Ružomberok, Žilina, Martin, Poprad, and the wider Liptov region. The club also benefits from cooperation with experienced regional chess official Karol Pekár, who serves as President of the Liptov Chess Association and regularly works as an arbiter and organizer at competitions in the region.

The Mayor’s Cup provides an important local opportunity for younger players as well as established tournament competitors. Category awards and accessible entry conditions encourage participation beyond the strongest players in the field. Moreover, by hosting a FIDE-rated rapid event in Liptovský Hrádok, the chess section gives local players an opportunity to compete for international rating without traveling to one of Slovakia’s larger chess centers.
