Šilalės r. Pajūrio Stanislovo Biržiškio gimnazija (Pajūris Stanislovas Biržiškis Gymnasium) is a municipal secondary school in Pajūris, Šilalė District, Lithuania, which also acts as an established chess tournament organizer. The institution’s educational history reaches back to 1853, when a parish school opened in Pajūris. The school received the name of Stanislovas Biržiškis in 2006 and gained gymnasium status in 2009. Chess has become a distinctive part of the gymnasium’s extracurricular and community program. The school organizes the annual Stanislovas Biržiškis Memorial Rapid Chess Tournament together with Šilalė District Municipality, while it also hosts school and district-level youth competitions. The memorial has developed into a substantial FIDE-rated event attracting players from across Lithuania and neighboring countries. In addition, the gymnasium uses chess as part of its broader educational work with children, including primary-school competitions and qualification events. Juozas Žymančius is the current Director of the gymnasium, while NA Tomas Veščiūnas is the principal chess organizer and the most useful contact for tournament enquiries. Veščiūnas directs the Stanislovas Biržiškis Memorial and is also active within the wider Lithuanian chess structure. The next edition, scheduled for September 19, 2026, is the 14th memorial tournament and has already attracted enough interest for the Open section to move additional registrations onto a waiting list.

📜 School History and Stanislovas Biržiškis

Education in Pajūris has a history of more than 170 years. The first parish school was established in 1853, followed by the creation of a state primary school in 1907. The modern school building was completed in the 1960s, and the institution later expanded into full secondary education. In 2006, the school was named after Stanislovas Biržiškis, a Lithuanian educator, agronomist, public figure, political prisoner, and chess enthusiast. In December 2009, its secondary education program was accredited and the institution formally became a gymnasium. Biržiškis’s personal relationship with chess forms an important link between the school’s identity and its current tournament program. His family preserved the folding wooden chessboard and pieces that he took with him when he was deported. In 2025, during events marking the 125th anniversary of his birth, the gymnasium also organized a simultaneous exhibition with GM Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen.

🏆 Stanislovas Biržiškis Memorial

The Stanislovas Biržiškis Memorial Rapid Chess Tournament is the gymnasium’s flagship chess event. The competition has become an annual meeting point for adult players, juniors, families, and titled competitors while commemorating the life of the school’s namesake. The 13th edition, held on September 13, 2025, attracted 163 players from Lithuania, Latvia, and Ukraine, ranging in age from five to 87. The large field demonstrated the tournament’s reach well beyond the immediate Pajūris community. The 14th edition will take place on September 19, 2026 at the gymnasium. The program consists of two nine-round Swiss tournaments. Tournament A uses a 12+5 rapid time control, while the junior B tournament uses 15+5. Both competitions are submitted for FIDE Rapid rating. NA Tomas Veščiūnas serves as Tournament Director, while NA Algirdas Rauduvė is Chief Arbiter of the A tournament. The main section offers cash prizes of €300, €250, and €200 for the top three finishers, alongside additional category awards.

🎓 Youth Chess and Community Activity

The gymnasium also uses chess within its educational program. In 2026, it hosted the Šilalė District primary-school chess championship qualification stage, bringing together pupils from Grades 1–4 at several schools. The Pajūris third-grade team won the qualification event and advanced to the Lithuanian primary-school championship final held at the Presidential Palace. These activities give children experience in structured competition before they progress into larger rated tournaments. Through the memorial tournament, school competitions, and cooperation with Šilalė District Municipality and the Lithuanian Chess Federation, the gymnasium has developed a chess program that connects education, local history, and competitive play.
