♟️ About the Organizer
Sirály Életmód SE, officially Sirály Életmód Sport Egyesület, is a nonprofit multi-sport association based in Budapest, Hungary. The organization was founded in 1998 and registered as a public-benefit nonprofit in 1999. It adopted its current name in 2014.
The association promotes regular exercise, recreational sport, competition, and healthy leisure activities. Its programs have included chess, running, football, handball, triathlon, hiking, Nordic walking, and other community sports.
The chess section is one of the association’s most active competitive departments. It welcomes children, adult club players, beginners, and experienced tournament competitors. Members can take part in training, individual tournaments, junior activities, and team competitions.
Juhász Béla serves as Head of the Chess Section and regularly works as tournament director and organizer. He also supports chess instruction, school programs, team administration, and communication with participating players.
🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Chess
Sirály Életmód SE organizes classical, rapid, junior, and FIDE-rated chess tournaments in Budapest. Its events are mainly held at Eötvös 10 Művelődési Ház in the Terézváros district.
The association organizes the recurring Terézváros Rapid Open. This competition provides FIDE-rated rapid chess and welcomes both rated and unrated players with the required federation eligibility. Separate awards have also been offered for juniors, seniors, and Sirály club members.
The club has expanded its program with international rating tournaments. The first Sirály International Tournament featured separate rating groups and seven rounds of classical chess. It gave participants an opportunity to gain or improve their FIDE standard ratings.
In September 2026, the association organizes the Terézváros Open 2026. The event includes U1800 and U2400 sections and is supported by the Municipality of Terézváros. Its purpose is to provide competitive experience, strengthen sporting relationships, and offer international rating opportunities.
Sirály Életmód SE also enters teams in the Budapest chess league system. The club has fielded several teams across different divisions, which allows members of varying strengths to participate in organized team chess.
🌱 Junior Chess and Community Activities
Youth development is a major part of the chess section’s work. The association organizes school tournaments, district student championships, talent-search competitions, training programs, and chess camps.
Its school activities have reached pupils in several central Budapest districts. The club has also cooperated with schools, cultural centers, municipal institutions, and the Hungarian Chess Federation.
Junior tournaments are usually divided by age or playing level. Therefore, young participants can compete against suitable opponents while learning tournament rules, time management, and sporting behavior.
The association has also organized district stages of the Hungarian School Chess Olympiad. These events give pupils a pathway from local school competition toward higher-level regional and national championships.
Through regular training, school cooperation, team chess, and public tournaments, Sirály Életmód SE supports both recreational and competitive chess in Budapest. Beginners can enter the game in an accessible environment, while experienced players can pursue ratings and stronger competition.
