Schachgesellschaft Turm Raesfeld/Erle (SG Turm Raesfeld/Erle) is a chess club serving Raesfeld and Erle in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Founded in 1978 by ten chess enthusiasts, the organization belongs to Schachbezirk Borken, Schachverband Münsterland, Schachbund Nordrhein-Westfalen, and the Deutscher Schachbund. The club has developed into one of the larger chess organizations in the Münsterland structure and currently has around 90 registered members. The club combines adult and junior team chess with regular training, internal competition, rapid and blitz chess, school cooperation, and tournament organization. Several senior teams compete at different levels of the German league system, while youth teams participate in regional and state competitions. Moreover, Raesfeld has built a strong reputation for junior chess, with young members reaching Münsterland, North Rhine-Westphalia, and German championship events. The club’s principal public tournament is the long-running Internationales Schnellschachturnier “Wappen von Raesfeld.” Martin Bergemann is the current Chairman and principal organizational contact of SG Turm Raesfeld/Erle. He is also closely involved in tournament management and represents the club in competitive events. The 2026–2027 season will again feature the first team in the NRW-Klasse, while the second team competes in the Münsterland Regionalliga. The immediate focus is the 27th International Rapid Tournament Wappen von Raesfeld, scheduled for September 5, 2026, followed by the NRW U10 Team Championship in Raesfeld on September 20.

📜 History and Development

SG Turm Raesfeld/Erle was founded in 1978. Franz-Josef Grömping and Manfred Grömping were among the ten original members and remained active with the organization four decades later. The club celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2018 with a special tournament and ceremony at Villa Becker. By that time, membership had grown beyond 70, placing Raesfeld among the larger clubs in the Schachverband Münsterland. Competitive development has accompanied this growth. The club has fielded teams across the Münsterland leagues and later advanced into North Rhine-Westphalia competition. Its first team made its debut in the NRW-Klasse in the 2023–2024 season, an important step beyond the regional Münsterland structure. The club has also developed a substantial rapid-chess tradition. Its Wappen von Raesfeld tournament has attracted Grandmasters and International Masters for decades and has become its most recognizable annual competition.

♜ Team Chess and Competitive Activity

Team chess remains central to the organization. SG Turm Raesfeld/Erle operates several adult squads, which gives members of different playing strengths access to regular league competition. The 2025–2026 season demonstrated this depth. The club’s second team finished runner-up in the Münsterland Regionalliga, scoring seven victories from nine matches. In addition, Raesfeld entered four teams in the 2025–2026 Borken district blitz team championship. Its first team finished second, while Raesfeld II placed third. For the 2026–2027 season, the first team continues in the NRW-Klasse, while Raesfeld II again competes in the Regionalliga. Additional teams participate lower in the regional structure. The club also enters cup and blitz competitions. Consequently, members can play classical league chess alongside faster team formats throughout the season.

🎓 Youth Chess and School Cooperation

Youth development has been one of SG Turm Raesfeld/Erle’s defining strengths for many years. The club works with local schools and introduces children to chess through training, school activities, and beginner-friendly competitions. This work has produced repeated regional successes. Raesfeld youth teams have competed at Münsterland and North Rhine-Westphalia level and have previously qualified for German championship events. The club has also participated in the Youth Bundesliga. The current junior program remains active. At the 2026 Münsterland U10 Individual Championship, three young Raesfeld players competed, with Lukas Völl finishing fourth. Meanwhile, Raesfeld is scheduled to host the Schachjugend NRW U10 Team Championship on September 20, 2026. The club also hosts local development tournaments. In December 2025, a Borken district junior event in Raesfeld attracted 43 children, with the host club collecting seven medals across the different age groups.

🏆 Internationales Schnellschachturnier “Wappen von Raesfeld”

The Wappen von Raesfeld is the club’s flagship tournament. Its documented winners list begins in 1997, and the event has attracted numerous titled players. Past champions include Grandmasters Vlastimil Hort, Daniel Fridman, Felix Levin, and Andrey Orlov, as well as International Masters Mikhail Zaitsev, Matthias Thesing, Karl-Heinz Podzielny, and Christian Richter. Fridman, Orlov, and Zaitsev have each won multiple editions. The 27th Internationales Schnellschachturnier “Wappen von Raesfeld” is scheduled for September 5, 2026 at the Mensa der Julia-Koppers-Gesamtschule in Raesfeld. Players will contest seven Swiss-system rounds with 25 minutes per player for each game. The tournament uses an unusual scoring system of three points for a win and one point for a draw. The published prize fund totals €1,040, including €250 for first place, additional overall prizes, five rating-category groups, and separate youth awards. Grandmasters and International Masters receive free entry. Martin Bergemann serves as the principal tournament contact. The event continues a series that has connected Raesfeld with strong players from across Germany and neighboring countries for nearly three decades.
