♟️ About the Organizer

CAPA Chess Academy is a chess training institution and tournament organizer based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The academy has promoted chess education and competitive play since 1990. It works with children, developing players, adults, coaches, and tournament participants across Chennai and the wider Tamil Nadu chess community. Moreover, it operates within the state chess structure and maintains an affiliation with the Chennai District Chess Association.

The late K. Muralimohan founded CAPA Chess Academy. He worked as an International Arbiter, FIDE Instructor, chess administrator, author, and tournament organizer. In addition, he dedicated a significant part of his career to children’s chess. Through CAPA, he organized more than 100 tournaments for young players and helped many children enter structured competition.

Muralimohan also held several important administrative positions. He served for many years as secretary of the Chennai District Chess Association. Later, he became General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association. He also worked as Joint Secretary and Rating Officer of the All India Chess Federation. Furthermore, he served as Championship Director of the 2011 World Junior and Junior Girls Chess Championships in Chennai.

Today, Priyanka Balaji serves as academy secretary and directs its current tournament activities. Other members of the organizing team support registration, technical coordination, player communication, and event management. Therefore, CAPA continues the tournament tradition established by its founder while expanding its program through new events and partnerships.

🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events

CAPA Chess Academy organizes state-level, national, and FIDE-rated competitions in Chennai. Its program includes rapid opens, children’s tournaments, rating-restricted competitions, and classical events. Moreover, the academy works with experienced arbiters and established registration platforms to manage large participant fields.

The Muralimohan Memorial CAPA Chess Academy Tournament is its principal recurring event series. The academy created the competition to honor its founder and continue his commitment to tournament chess. Different editions have included FIDE-rated rapid opens and Tamil Nadu state-level competitions. In addition, the events offer overall prizes, rating awards, age-group trophies, and recognition for women, veterans, and young participants.

The 2023 Muralimohan Memorial Rapid Rating Open attracted 365 players from several Indian states. The field included a grandmaster, international masters, titled players, juniors, and international participants. Moreover, the organizers offered a total prize fund of ₹200,000 and numerous trophies. FM Harsh Suresh won the tournament after scoring 8/9.

CAPA continued its international rapid series in 2024. FIDE records show that the fifth CAPA Chess Academy International Rapid Rating Open attracted 150 players. The academy organized the competition at the Hall of Chess in Chennai. Furthermore, the event used a 10-minute time control with a five-second increment.

In 2026, the academy organized the eighth Muralimohan Memorial Tamil Nadu State-Level Rapid Open. The seven-round competition took place at the Hall of Chess in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Priyanka Balaji served as tournament director. Meanwhile, the tournament offered cash prizes and trophies across several categories.

CAPA also cooperates with other Chennai organizers. In February and March 2026, it partnered with Warrior Chess Academy on an international FIDE-rated classical tournament. The nine-round event used a 90-minute time control with a 30-second increment. In addition, the organizers appointed an experienced international arbitration team.

🌱 Chess Training and Player Development

CAPA Chess Academy combines tournament organization with structured chess education. Its coaching program covers rules, tactics, strategy, calculation, endgames, and tournament preparation. Therefore, beginners can learn the foundations while experienced students can develop more advanced competitive skills.

The academy uses a structured syllabus and regular practice sessions. Students play against opponents with different styles and levels of experience. As a result, they learn to apply theoretical ideas during practical games. The coaching program also helps students understand clocks, notation, tournament rules, and competition procedures.

CAPA provides both in-person and online coaching. In addition, it supports students who want to participate in district, state, national, and FIDE-rated events. Tournament exposure forms an important part of the training process because players can test their skills under formal competitive conditions.

Children’s chess remains central to the academy’s work. CAPA regularly organizes separate age groups for boys and girls. These categories often range from Under-7 to Under-17, while selected events also include open or youth sections. Moreover, extensive trophy and medal programs give developing players achievable goals and encourage continued participation.

The academy also helps other organizers promote and manage their competitions. Its online platforms publish tournament announcements, regulations, registration links, and results. Consequently, CAPA supports a wider network of chess academies and tournament organizers across Tamil Nadu.

Through coaching, children’s competitions, large rapid opens, and FIDE-rated classical events, CAPA Chess Academy provides several routes into organized chess. New students can begin with structured lessons and age-group tournaments. Meanwhile, stronger players can progress toward state, national, and international rating events.
