Hobsons Bay Chess Club Inc. (HBCC) is a long-established chess organization based in Altona, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The club has served Melbourne’s western suburbs since 1974 and today provides competitive chess, junior coaching, regular rated tournaments, community activities, and major open events for players of different ages and strengths. The club operates from 108 Queen Street, Altona, where members meet for regular Tuesday tournaments and Saturday junior activities. 🏆 Best in the West

The club’s flagship tournament is Best in the West, one of the longest-running major chess events in western Melbourne. Hobsons Bay Chess Club launched the tournament in 1982. Since then, it has attracted many of Victoria’s strongest players together with competitors from other Australian states and overseas. Its winners list includes prominent Australian players such as IM Darryl Johansen, IM Guy West, IM James Morris, FM Greg Canfell, and FM Domagoj Dragicevic, alongside many other titled and leading club players. The tournament has experienced several breaks during its history, but HBCC has continued to preserve and revive the event. Consequently, Best in the West remains strongly associated with the club’s identity and with competitive chess in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

🌟 Best in the West 2026

The 2026 Best in the West takes place on August 29–30, 2026, at Finnish Hall in Altona. The competition uses a five-round Swiss system with a classical time control of 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. Results count for both FIDE and Australian Chess Federation ratings. The tournament has a maximum capacity of 120 players and welcomes titled players, experienced competitors, juniors, women, developing players, and unrated participants. The guaranteed prize structure includes AU$1,200 for first place, AU$600 for second, AU$300 for third, a AU$1,000 junior prize pool, a women’s prize, rating-group prizes, an unrated-player prize, and an award for the biggest upset. FA/CM Tony Davis serves as Tournament Director, while IA Casey Goh is the Chief Organiser.

🎓 Junior Chess and Coaching

Junior development is a central part of Hobsons Bay Chess Club. The club provides structured coaching on Saturdays, followed by regular tournaments for rookies and junior players. 🏅 Casey Goh and Club Leadership

Casey Goh is the current President of Hobsons Bay Chess Club and one of its principal tournament organizers. FIDE awarded him the FIDE Arbiter title in 2022 and the International Arbiter title in 2023. He also holds FIDE School Instructor qualifications. His tournament work extends beyond Hobsons Bay. Casey has officiated at major Australian events and has contributed extensively to chess administration, junior development, tournament technology, and arbiter education. In 2026, the Australian Chess Federation recognized this contribution by presenting him with the Koshnitsky Medal, an award for outstanding service to Australian chess.
