Founded in 1988, the club has developed into a long-standing center for competitive and community chess in the municipality. It operates from permanent premises in the municipal Social Services building on Calle del Agua and participates within the structures of the Federación Insular de Ajedrez de Gran Canaria and Federación Canaria de Ajedrez. The club combines federated team competition with tournament organization, junior activities, rapid and blitz chess, and events for the wider community. Its first team competes under the C.A. San Mateo Panadería Pulido name, reflecting a long-running partnership with the local company Panadería Pulido. Moreover, the club organizes several established competitions, including the Torneo de Ajedrez Tinamar, the Torneo Internacional Vega de San Mateo, rapid events, neighborhood blitz circuits, and school tournaments. José Miguel Sánchez Rivero is one of the club’s principal current organizational contacts and regularly serves as Tournament Director. Club de Ajedrez San Mateo was founded in 1988 and has maintained organized chess activity in Vega de San Mateo for almost four decades. During that time, it has established strong links with the municipality, local businesses, and the chess federations of Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands. Its permanent headquarters occupy the first floor of the Edificio de Servicios Sociales on Calle del Agua. The Federación Insular de Ajedrez de Gran Canaria lists the same premises as the club’s official base. Therefore, the location serves as more than a temporary tournament venue and provides a regular home for club chess in the municipality. A particularly important relationship has developed with Panadería Pulido, a historic local business. The partnership appears in the name of the club’s federated team, C.A. San Mateo Panadería Pulido, and the company has supported numerous tournaments and chess initiatives.

Club de Ajedrez San Mateo participates in the official Gran Canaria team championship. In the 2026 Liga Gran Canaria por Equipos – Categoría Preferente, its leading team competed as C.A. San Mateo Panadería Pulido against clubs including Fundación La Caja, C.A. Guía, Telde Los Llanos, ArucasChess, La Caja Vecindario, CanariasChess, and Sociedad La Montaña. One example is the Circuito Blitz Barrios de San Mateo, which stages short-format tournaments in neighborhoods around the municipality. The fourth circuit in 2025 included competitions in La Lechucilla, Lomo Carbonero, Utiaca, and La Lechuza. These tournaments used a rapid 5 minutes + 3 seconds per move format and were open to players from outside the club as well as local participants. The organization has also staged school and Christmas events. Some of these activities have incorporated a solidarity component, including tournaments connected with donations for local children. Therefore, Club de Ajedrez San Mateo uses its tournament program both for formal competition and for wider community participation.

🏆 XXXVI Torneo de Ajedrez Tinamar 2026

The Torneo de Ajedrez Tinamar is one of the club’s longest-running competitions. Its 36th edition is scheduled for September 10–13, 2026 in Vega de San Mateo. Club de Ajedrez San Mateo organizes the tournament at the Local Sociocultural de Vega de San Mateo. The announced classical time control is 60 minutes + 3 seconds per move. Reaching 36 editions demonstrates the continuity of tournament chess within the municipality. Moreover, the event complements the club’s newer international festival and provides another competitive opportunity during the 2026 season.

🌟 IV Festival de Ajedrez Vega de San Mateo 2026

The club’s principal international project is the IV Festival de Ajedrez Vega de San Mateo, now officially scheduled for December 4–13, 2026. The festival combines classical, blitz, and rapid chess with additional activities in the municipality. The main IV Torneo Internacional Vega de San Mateo will run from December 5–11. Players will contest nine Swiss-system rounds at 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move. The competition counts for FIDE Standard rating and is valid for international title norms. The organizers have announced a prize fund exceeding €8,000, including a €2,000 first prize. José Miguel Sánchez Rivero and Miguel Ángel Mayor Déniz serve as Tournament Directors. IA José David Rodríguez Falcón is Chief Arbiter, while NA Ricardo Mesa Cruz serves as Deputy Chief Arbiter. The festival also includes the I Blitz Nocturno Vega de San Mateo on December 8 and the IV Activo Internacional Francisco Rodríguez Pulido “Paco Pulido” on December 12. The rapid tournament uses nine rounds at 10+5, while the nocturnal blitz adds a shorter FIDE-rated format to the program. The festival receives institutional support from the Ayuntamiento de Vega de San Mateo, Instituto Insular de Deportes, Gobierno de Canarias, Federación Canaria de Ajedrez, and Federación Insular de Ajedrez de Gran Canaria.
