♟️ About the Organizer
Club d’Escacs Sant Adrià is a historic chess organization based in Sant Adrià de Besòs, Barcelona, Spain. Local chess enthusiasts founded the club in 1962. Since then, it has promoted chess in the city through training, club activity, team competition, and public events.
Joan Molinero Martín serves as club president. He also directs several of the organization’s principal tournaments. Meanwhile, Daniel Gómez Cortés and Ricard Llerins Bonet support tournament operations, player communication, and arbitration. The club works closely with the Catalan Chess Federation and Sant Adrià de Besòs City Council.
The club operates from Complex Esportiu Ricart in central Sant Adrià de Besòs. Members can attend regular sessions, play casual games, and prepare for official competitions. In addition, the club enters several teams in the Catalan Chess League. Its activities welcome juniors, adults, beginners, and experienced tournament players.
🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events
The Obert d’Escacs Ciutat de Sant Adrià is one of the club’s longest-running competitions. The 2026 tournament reached its twentieth edition. It features nine classical rounds on Sunday mornings during spring. Moreover, the Catalan Chess Federation rates the results for Catalan Elo.
The club also organizes the Open Internacional d’Escacs Sant Adrià each August. It launched the international series in 2017. Since then, the tournament has welcomed titled players, juniors, club competitors, and international visitors. The event forms part of the prestigious Catalan International Open Circuit.
The eighth international edition takes place from August 12–20, 2026. It offers nine rounds across two rating groups. In addition, the organizers submit both groups for FIDE, FEDA, and FCE rating. Group A also offers opportunities to achieve Catalan Master, International Master, and Grandmaster norms. The announced prize fund totals €3,330.
Recent editions have attracted players from several countries. For example, the 2025 tournament recorded 103 entries from eight nations. The organizers also held a separate blitz competition during the event. Therefore, participants could combine classical and faster chess within the same festival.
The club manages regulations, registration, pairings, arbitration, results, rating submissions, and prize distribution. Furthermore, it publishes tournament information and standings through its website and Chess-Results. Municipal and federation support helps the club maintain suitable venues and playing conditions.
🌱 Youth Chess and Community Development
Club d’Escacs Sant Adrià combines formal competition with accessible community chess. Regular sessions give local players a place to meet, practise, and analyze games. As a result, beginners can gain experience before entering rated events.
The club also supports junior players through team chess and individual competition. Young members can participate in local, Catalan, Spanish, and international events. For example, club player Marc Mumbrú represented Catalonia at the 2023 European Youth Rapid and Blitz Championships in Slovenia.
In addition, the organization brings chess into the city’s public celebrations. It regularly contributes to the Festa Major de Sant Adrià de Besòs through open tournaments and simultaneous exhibitions. These activities allow residents to enjoy chess without formal tournament experience.
The club also hosts regional federation competitions at its playing venue. Therefore, local players can experience important Catalan events close to home. Its cooperation with the city council strengthens the connection between competitive chess and community sport.
Through weekly activity, team participation, youth development, and international tournaments, the club serves players at different stages. Its long history also gives it an important place in the sporting life of Sant Adrià de Besòs.
