Visagino Šachmatų Klubas was founded on September 22, 1978, during the early development of the city now known as Visaginas. Consequently, chess has formed part of the local sporting community for almost five decades. The Visaginas Municipality currently identifies the club as one of the city’s oldest sports organizations. Over time, its activities have expanded from traditional club chess into structured instruction, junior development, FIDE-rated tournament organization, and online competition. Today, the organization operates its own chess studio and maintains the technical infrastructure required to broadcast selected games from electronic boards. This allows local tournaments to use playing conditions normally associated with larger competitive events. The club also participates in wider community initiatives. In 2026, Visaginas City Museum included the chess club among the local sporting organizations participating in its “Sporto ir meno jungtys Visagine” project, which documents and presents the development of sport in the city.

🏆 Visaginas Chess Masters

The Visaginas Chess Masters series is the club’s principal current FIDE-rated tournament project. The events are organized by Visagino Šachmatų Klubas in partnership with Visaginas City Museum. The series is designed around four tournament dates per year. Each event uses a seven-round Swiss system with a rapid time control of 10 minutes plus a 5-second increment per move and is submitted for FIDE Rapid rating. Visaginas Chess Masters III took place on August 30, 2026 at Visaginas City Museum. Jevgenij Volosatov served as Chief Arbiter, while Visaginas Chess Club was officially listed as organizer. The series continues with Visaginas Chess Masters IV on November 29, 2026, again at Visaginas City Museum, Atgimimo al. 23. The Lithuanian Chess Federation has included the tournament in its official upcoming-events calendar. The partnership with the museum gives the series a distinctive local setting while also connecting competitive chess with broader cultural activities in Visaginas.
