♟️ About Fédération Monégasque des Échecs

The Fédération Monégasque des Échecs (FME), or Monaco Chess Federation, is the national governing body for chess in the Principality of Monaco. Founded in 1949 and affiliated with FIDE since 1958, the federation represents Monaco internationally while promoting competitive, youth, women’s, senior, and community chess within the Principality. It is also a member of the European Small Nations Association and was a founding member of the international Francophone chess association created in 2007. FME works closely with the Cercle d’Échecs de Monte-Carlo (CEMC), with both organizations sharing leadership, facilities, and much of their sporting infrastructure. Together they provide regular training, national championships, junior competition, FIDE-rated tournaments, and participation in international team events. Monaco also has a particularly strong tradition in women’s chess and has repeatedly hosted major European and FIDE competitions. Jean-Michel Rapaire has served as President of the Fédération Monégasque des Échecs since December 1991 and is the federation’s principal public contact. He is also President of the Cercle d’Échecs de Monte-Carlo and was re-elected as a Vice President of the European Chess Union in 2026. FME’s current program includes the Monaco Blitz Master on August 29, the European Small Nations Individual Championships in November 2026, and further European women’s and senior championships in Monte-Carlo in January 2027.

📜 History and International Chess

Monaco has a long history as a venue for high-level chess. The federation’s historical records include the 1967 Monaco International Grand Prix, won by Bobby Fischer, followed by tournaments won by Bent Larsen in 1968 and former World Champion Vasily Smyslov in 1969. The Principality later became especially prominent in women’s chess. Monaco hosted the 1993 Women’s World Championship match between Xie Jun and Nana Ioseliani, the 2015 FIDE Women’s Grand Prix, Women’s Candidates competition in 2022, and several editions of the European Women’s Rapid and Blitz Championships. In addition, the federation has maintained a close relationship with Europe’s small chess nations. Monaco has hosted Small Nations competitions and regularly represents the Principality in Chess Olympiads and other international team events.

🏆 Monaco Championship 2026

The 2026 Monaco Championship took place from February 23 to March 1. The classical national championship also played an important role in selecting Monaco’s teams for international competition. IM Damir Levacic won the 2026 Monaco Open Championship. WGM Tatiana Dornbusch became Women’s Champion of Monaco after scoring 4.5/7 and finishing ahead of WIM Marija Zvereva on tiebreak. Following the championship, the federation confirmed an Open Olympiad lineup featuring Levacic, GM Amir Bagheri, Riccardo Costalonga, GM Igor Efimov, and FM Alexis Cahen. The Women’s team included Dornbusch, Zvereva, WCM Svetlana Berezovska, WCM Fiorina Berezovsky, and WIM Julia Lebel.

🎓 Youth Chess and Development

Youth chess remains an important part of FME’s program. Together with the Cercle d’Échecs de Monte-Carlo, the federation provides regular coaching throughout the week and organizes championships for young players. Monaco also hosts the international ChessMates youth tournament. The 13th International Youth ChessMates Tournament took place in Monte-Carlo in March 2026 and brought together young players through several team and individual competition groups. The federation supports Monaco juniors competing outside the Principality as well. Young players participate in French youth leagues and championships as well as European and international events.

🌍 Major International Events in 2026–2027

Monaco opened 2026 by hosting the European Women’s Rapid and Blitz Championships from January 8–12 at Novotel Monte-Carlo. The event set participation records and attracted leading European players. IM Eline Roebers won the blitz title, while GM Nino Batsiashvili captured the rapid championship. On August 29, 2026, FME will organize the inaugural Monaco Blitz Master at Maison des Associations. The 11-round FIDE-rated competition uses a 5+2 time control and offers more than €1,600 in prizes. A larger international assignment follows from November 21–29, 2026, when Monaco will host the 7th European Small Nations Individual Championship and 3rd European Small Nations Individual Women’s Championship. Ten European small nations are eligible to send representatives, with both championships played as nine-round round robins. The federation has already secured further ECU events for January 2027, including another European Women’s Rapid and Blitz Championship and the inaugural European Senior Rapid and Blitz Championships.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Jean-Michel Rapaire has led FME for more than three decades and remains directly involved in tournament organization, international relations, national-team activity, and player development. His wider European role is significant. In addition to leading both FME and CEMC, he serves as a Vice President of the European Chess Union and regularly acts as Tournament Director for major ECU events held in Monaco. The federation operates from the same Monte-Carlo chess premises used by CEMC, where training and club activities take place throughout most of the week.
