Šachový klub Dúbravan is a chess club based in Bratislava-Dúbravka, Slovakia. Founded in 2011 by 15 members, the club was created to provide chess training for children, participate in Slovak team leagues, and organize tournaments for players in the Dúbravka district. Today, its activities include league chess, youth development, club tournaments, FIDE-rated competition, rapid and blitz events, educational lectures, and community chess. Dúbravan maintains a regular club presence at Centrum rodiny on Bazovského 6, where club sessions are held on Thursdays outside holidays. The club competes within the Bratislava and Slovak league system and fields players across different rating and age groups. During the 2025–2026 season, its first team competed in 3. liga A1, while a second team represented the club in 5. liga A11b. Dúbravan also works with other Bratislava chess organizations on scholastic championships and regional events. FA Ladislav Šipeky is the current President of Šachový klub Dúbravan and has played a central role in its development since joining the club in 2011. He is also an experienced arbiter, coach, and chess official. The club’s principal tournament, the FIDE Open Dúbravan – O pohár SNP, is currently taking place from August 23–29, 2026 in Bratislava. Tomáš Laho serves as Tournament Director, while Šipeky is Chief Arbiter.

📜 History and Development

Šachový klub Dúbravan was formed in April 2011. Its 15 founding members adopted the club’s first statutes, and the organization formally began its activities later that month. Rastislav Kevický was the first club president and played an important role in establishing organized chess in Dúbravka. The club initially operated at ZŠ Pri kríži, where Kevický also taught chess to children. Ladislav Šipeky joined in August 2011 as a methodology specialist and coach for advanced players. The club moved to Kultúrne centrum Fontána in 2012, and Šipeky subsequently became President. Since 2015, regular club activities have been based at Centrum rodiny on Bazovského Street.

🎓 Youth and Community Chess

Youth chess has formed part of Dúbravan’s mission since its foundation. The club has organized children’s tournaments, school championships, training sessions, and competitions connected with the Bratislava youth chess structure. In November 2025, Dúbravan helped organize the Bratislava Regional Primary School Rapid Chess Championships at Kultúrne centrum Fontána together with the Bratislava Chess Federation and other partners. The club also provides broader chess education. Its Chess Mind project is a series of lectures aimed at players, coaches, arbiters, organizers, and chess officials. Topics have included women’s chess, tournament organization, chess administration, and other aspects of competitive chess. Since 2021, Dúbravan has additionally organized a charity women’s chess tournament. The fifth edition in June 2025 also served as the Bratislava Region Women’s Rapid Chess Championship.

♜ Team Chess

Dúbravan participates regularly in Bratislava league competitions and has gradually progressed through the Slovak team structure. The club historically competed in the 5th and 4th leagues before reaching the 3rd League and later appearing at 2nd League level. During 2025–2026, the club’s first team competed in 3. liga A1, an eight-board competition involving 12 Bratislava-region teams. Dúbravan finished 11th, scoring four match points and 26.5 individual game points. Its squad included players such as Tibor Čajka, Jakub Suchánsky, Ladislav Šipeky, Branislav Šulgan, Andrej Jančura, Oleksandra Baidetska, Tomáš Laho, Anton Oriňák, and Adrián Struhár. Dúbravan also fielded a B team in 5. liga A11b, providing additional competitive opportunities for club members.

🏆 FIDE Open Dúbravan – O pohár SNP

The club’s flagship tournament is the FIDE Open Dúbravan – O pohár SNP, traditionally held near the end of August. The tournament series dates back to the club’s earliest years and has become a regular classical event in the Bratislava chess calendar. The 13th edition is taking place from August 23–29, 2026 at Kultúrne centrum Fontána in Bratislava-Dúbravka. The current field contains 64 players, including competitors from Slovakia and several foreign federations. Players compete over seven Swiss-system rounds. The time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 10 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. Results count toward both FIDE and Slovak national ratings. Tomáš Laho is Tournament Director, FA Ladislav Šipeky is Chief Arbiter, and Oleksandra Baidetska serves as Deputy Chief Arbiter. The organizing team also includes Peter Lukáč, Adrián Struhár, and other Dúbravan members.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Ladislav Šipeky is the current President and primary public contact for Šachový klub Dúbravan. Official records continue to identify him as the club’s chairman in 2026. Beyond his work with Dúbravan, Šipeky is active in Bratislava chess administration and currently serves on the Bratislava Chess Federation’s Arbiter Commission. He holds the FIDE Arbiter title and regularly works as Chief Arbiter at rated competitions. Tomáš Laho is another key member of the club’s current tournament organization and serves on the Council of the Bratislava Chess Federation.
