Igor Oscar Lutz is a Brazilian chess organizer, International Arbiter, National Master, chess instructor, and tournament director based in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. He has worked in organized chess for many years, combining tournament management, arbitration, player development, school chess, and competitive play. FIDE awarded Lutz the FIDE Arbiter title in 2009 and the International Arbiter title in 2011. He currently holds an active International Arbiter licence. In addition, the Brazilian Chess Confederation recognizes him as a Mestre Nacional – National Master, reflecting his own experience as a competitive chess player. Education represents another major part of his work. Lutz holds a degree in Physical Education and has spent many years teaching chess to children and young players in Goiás. 🏆 Goiânia Chess Open Arena

One of Igor Lutz’s major current projects is the Goiânia Chess Open Arena. The 2026 edition took place from August 21–23 at Arena Educação in Goiânia. Lutz served as both Organizer and Chief Arbiter, while FA Henrique Silva Cardoso worked as Tournament Director. The festival combined a six-round classical tournament with a nine-round blitz competition. Both events received national and international rating. The classical tournament used a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move, while the blitz tournament used 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move. Together, the two events offered R$20,000 in prizes, divided between R$16,000 for the classical competition and R$4,000 for blitz. The tournament also attracted titled players from Brazil and abroad. Therefore, it provided local competitors with an opportunity to face strong opposition without leaving Goiás.

🎓 Circuito de Xadrez Escolar

A major part of Igor Lutz’s chess career is connected with the Circuito de Xadrez Escolar. The project was founded in April 2003 by Igor Oscar Lutz, Henrique Cardoso, and Alexandre Miranda. Its objective is to make competitive chess accessible to schoolchildren while using the game as an educational tool. The circuit serves students from the first years of elementary school through the final years of secondary education. Players compete in age and school-year categories at several stages throughout the year. Over more than two decades, the Circuito de Xadrez Escolar has worked with thousands of students from public and private schools. Moreover, its tournaments promote concentration, logical thinking, discipline, respect, decision-making, and healthy competition. Regular stages continue to take place in Goiânia. The modern circuit also works with schools, sponsors, teachers, arbiters, and chess organizations to provide professionally managed tournaments for young players.

🌱 Chess Education and Player Development

Igor Lutz works not only as a tournament organizer but also as a chess educator. His teaching experience includes school chess, individual instruction, competition preparation, and programs for developing players. Furthermore, he works with educational projects that use chess as both a sport and a pedagogical activity. Lutz is also associated with Instituto Xeque-Mate, where he contributes his experience as a teacher, National Master, International Arbiter, and organizer. His involvement in school chess creates a direct pathway into federation competition. Children can begin by participating in school tournaments before progressing toward open competitions, state championships, FIDE-rated events, and stronger national tournaments. Consequently, his work connects grassroots chess education with the formal Brazilian competitive system.

🧑‍⚖️ International Arbiter and Arbiter Education

Arbitration has formed a major part of Igor Lutz’s chess career for more than 15 years. FIDE approved his FIDE Arbiter title in June 2009. Two years later, at the 82nd FIDE Congress in Krakow in October 2011, he received the International Arbiter title. Since then, he has worked as Chief Arbiter or senior arbiter at Brazilian championships, state tournaments, FIDE-rated opens, rapid and blitz events, school competitions, and other tournaments. His work also includes training new chess arbiters. In 2024, Lutz taught a CBX-sanctioned chess-arbitration course in Goiânia covering tournament organization, rating, titles, appeals committees, illegal moves, game notation, pairing systems, tie-breaks, arbiter conduct, and practical cases. Igor Lutz has played a long-standing role in organized chess throughout Goiás. He has directed stages of the Campeonato Goiano Absoluto, one of the principal state championship competitions. For example, the Brazilian Chess Confederation listed him as Director of the fourth stage of the 2025 Goiás Absolute Championship. He is also involved in the Circuito IRT Xadrez por Goiás, a series of FIDE-rated tournaments designed to give local players regular classical competition. In June 2026, CBX identified Lutz as Tournament Director of the first stage of that circuit. The event consisted of six rounds of standard chess and counted toward FIDE rating. His tournament history in Goiás extends much further back. CBX records already show him working as an arbiter in nationally rated competitions during the 2000s and at school championships in the early 2010s.
