♟️ About Elite Chess Events

Elite Chess Events is an England-based chess tournament organization directed by Lance Leslie-Smith, a FIDE International Arbiter and experienced tournament organizer. Its current program concentrates on FIDE- and ECF-rated over-the-board chess, particularly in London. Rather than operating as a conventional membership chess club, Elite Chess Events creates and manages tournaments in classical, rapid, and blitz formats, including strong international opens and invitational competitions. The organization works independently as well as in partnership with established chess and mind-sports organizations. Its 2026 activities include the VI Mindsports International Festival, the chess program of the 30th Mind Sports Olympiad, and the forthcoming Army and Navy Club Pall Mall Masters with Chess England. The events range from large Swiss-system opens to compact round robins featuring titled players. Moreover, Elite Chess Events regularly works with experienced International Arbiters and provides FIDE and national rating wherever the tournament format permits. Lance Leslie-Smith serves as Tournament Director and principal contact for Elite Chess Events. He handles tournament planning, entries, player communication, and coordination with arbiters and partner organizations. The organization completed an intensive August 2026 program with the Mind Sports Olympiad chess events on August 22–23 and the VI Mindsports International Festival from August 24–29. Its next major confirmed event is the 2026 Army and Navy Club Pall Mall Masters, scheduled for October 3–4, 2026 in central London.

📜 Tournament Development

Lance Leslie-Smith had already established a substantial tournament-organizing program before Elite Chess Events became the formal organization behind his current events. In 2025, he directed the V Mindsports International Chess Festival at the London Mindsports Centre. That tournament ran from August 13–18, 2025 and combined a nine-round International Open with three evening blitz tournaments. The classical event offered opportunities for title norms and attracted an international field, while the overall classical prize fund reached £4,000. The series continued under Elite Chess Events in 2026, with the sixth edition retaining its international classical format while simplifying the time control to 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. Consequently, the organization has developed continuity around serious international tournament chess while also expanding into rapid and blitz partnerships.

🏆 VI Mindsports International Festival 2026

Elite Chess Events organized the VI Mindsports International Festival 2026 – Super Swiss from August 24–29, 2026 at the London Mindsports Centre, 21 Dalling Road. The main competition consisted of nine rounds of classical chess using the Swiss system. Players received 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one, and results counted for both FIDE and national rating. The tournament attracted a strong international field with an average rating above 2100. Participants included several Grandmasters and International Masters, with players representing numerous national federations. Elite Chess Events offered a £4,000 prize fund, including £1,250 for first place, £800 for second, and £600 for third. Additional awards were available for women, juniors, senior players, and rating categories. Lance Leslie-Smith served as Tournament Director, while IA Jake Hung was Chief Arbiter and IA Jo Wildman Deputy Chief Arbiter. The event also received support from organizations including the English Chess Federation, The Chess Trust, John Robinson Youth Chess Trust, and Friends of Chess.

⚡ Mind Sports Olympiad Chess 2026

Elite Chess Events also partnered with the Mind Sports Olympiad to organize its main FIDE-rated chess program on August 22–23, 2026 at Mercure London Earls Court. The rapid program attracted nearly 160 registered players across the Open, Under 1900, and Under 1600 sections. Moreover, more than 30 Grandmasters and International Masters were registered across the chess program. The main Rapid Open consisted of 10 Swiss-system rounds at 15+10 and offered a £4,000 prize fund. GM Joseph Girel won the Open with 9/10. Two separate FIDE-rated blitz competitions complemented the rapid event. The Saturday tournament used 3+2, while the Sunday competition used five minutes per player. Chess at the wider Mind Sports Olympiad also included Chess960, bughouse, and problem solving. The partnership demonstrates Elite Chess Events’ ability to manage large rated competitions within a broader international festival while serving players across several rating levels.

🌟 Army and Navy Club Pall Mall Masters 2026

Elite Chess Events and Chess England will jointly organize the 2026 Army and Navy Club Pall Mall Masters on October 3–4, 2026 at the Army & Navy Club, 36 Pall Mall, London. The festival features separate Masters and Challengers competitions in both rapid and blitz chess. The Masters rapid uses a six-player double round robin, producing ten games for each participant. Meanwhile, the Challengers event uses a ten-player single round robin. The published Masters field includes strong Grandmasters such as Luke McShane, Jules Moussard, Gawain Maroroa Jones, and Maxime Lagarde. The average rating of the announced Masters rapid field is above 2600. The rapid time control is 15 minutes plus a 5-second increment, while the blitz uses 3+2. The published Masters prize fund is £4,750, including £1,500 for first place. The Challengers competitions offer a separate £2,400 prize fund. Lance Leslie-Smith serves as Tournament Director. IA Alan Atkinson is Chief Arbiter, supported by International Arbiters Adam Raoof and Jake Hung.
