Norbert A. Klipsch is a German chess organizer, arbiter, player, and chess official active in Freiburg im Breisgau and the surrounding South Baden region. He currently serves as Chairman of Schachbezirk Freiburg e.V., the regional chess district that coordinates clubs, leagues, championships, cup competitions, rapid and blitz chess, youth events, and other organized chess activities around Freiburg. Alongside his district responsibilities, Klipsch is closely associated with Schachclub Horben e.V., where he serves as Youth Director. His work therefore ranges from administrative leadership and tournament organization to junior training and practical event management. He also remains an active tournament player representing SC Horben. In August 2026, Klipsch successfully completed the Deutscher Schachbund qualification for National Arbiter (NA). FIDE’s current arbiter database now lists him as a German National Arbiter under FIDE ID 34610170. His largest current tournament project is the inaugural Freiburger Bogoljubow Open, scheduled for October 28–November 1, 2026, which he organizes together with chess clubs from Freiburg.

🏛️ Schachbezirk Freiburg

As Chairman of Schachbezirk Freiburg, Klipsch plays a central role in coordinating competitive chess across the district. He represents the organization publicly and regularly communicates tournament announcements, results, league information, youth activities, cup competitions, and regional chess news. The district’s 2026 calendar includes individual and team blitz championships, district individual championships, youth competitions, cup events, open tournaments, and qualification events within the Badischer Schachverband structure. Klipsch is also involved in increasing cooperation between Schachbezirk Freiburg and Schachbezirk Hochrhein. Players from both districts increasingly participate in joint activities, including youth events and championships. The autumn of 2026 is particularly active in Freiburg. The district blitz championships are scheduled for September 20, followed by the combined Freiburg and Hochrhein district individual championships on October 10–11 and several major events later in October.

🎓 Youth Chess and SC Horben

Youth development represents another important part of Klipsch’s chess activity. At SC Horben, he serves as Youth Director and is a direct contact for children and families interested in joining the club. The club provides regular junior chess sessions and works to introduce new children to organized chess. Its youth activities include training, practical games, participation in regional championships, and opportunities to progress toward competitive club chess. Klipsch has also been involved in tournaments such as the Schauinsland-Pokal, which provides competition for young players across several age categories. On October 10–11, 2026, SC Horben will host the district individual championships for adults and the U14–U18 youth categories in cooperation with the Freiburg and Hochrhein chess districts. This continues the club’s role as an important venue for regional championship chess.

⚖️ Chess Arbiter and Tournament Activity

Klipsch combines organizational responsibilities with active arbiting. On August 23, 2026, he and Nico Schepers successfully completed a Deutscher Schachbund National Arbiter course in Gladenbach. The qualification allows them to officiate independently at DSB competitions and provides a pathway toward further qualification as FIDE Arbiters. FIDE’s official database currently records Norbert Klipsch as a National Arbiter (NA). Before receiving the national qualification, Klipsch had already worked as an arbiter at regional events. For example, he served as Chief Arbiter at the 2025 Freiburg District Individual Championship organized by SC Horben and Schachbezirk Freiburg. He also remains an active player. Recent tournament records show him representing SC Horben in rated competitions in Germany and Switzerland.

🏆 1st Freiburger Bogoljubow Open 2026

The 1st Freiburger Bogoljubow Open is scheduled from October 28 to November 1, 2026 at the May-Bellinghausen-Halle in Freiburg im Breisgau. Norbert A. Klipsch is the principal organizer, working together with Freiburg chess clubs. The tournament was created to establish a new major classical Open in Freiburg. According to the organizers, the city and surrounding South Baden region have not hosted a comparable large open chess tournament for approximately two decades. Therefore, the goal is to establish the Bogoljubow Open as a recurring event. The competition features A and B tournaments. The A-Open is for players with a tournament rating of at least 1800, while the B-Open is for players below 1800. Both sections consist of nine Swiss-system rounds. Players receive 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. The tournaments count for FIDE Elo and German DWZ ratings. Klipsch also serves as Chief Arbiter, with Benedikt Riesterer and Nico Schepers forming part of the published arbiter team. The organizers intend the event to bring club players, ambitious juniors, and titled competitors together in a substantial new tournament for Freiburg.
