Šahovski klub “Brotnjo” Čitluk is an active chess club based in Čitluk, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Founded in 2008, the organization promotes tournament chess, youth development, chess education, and competitive opportunities throughout the Brotnjo and Međugorje area. The club operates dedicated chess premises within Gradski stadion Bare in Čitluk. From there, it provides an environment for young players, adult club members, recreational players, and competitors preparing for official championships. Moreover, ŠK Brotnjo regularly participates in competitions organized through the Chess Federation “Herceg-Bosna” and wider Bosnia and Herzegovina chess structures. Dragan Prskalo currently serves as President of Šahovski klub Brotnjo. Ivan Pehar serves as President of the Club Assembly and is also closely involved in tournament organization. Under their leadership, the club has developed from a local chess association into an increasingly visible tournament organizer with international events in both Čitluk and Međugorje.

🏆 Brotnjo Open

One of the club’s most established projects is the Brotnjo Open, an international tournament specifically developed for cadets and juniors. The competition has become an annual meeting point for young players from Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighboring countries. Players compete in separate age-based sections, while additional prizes recognize performances across several junior categories. The 8th International Brotnjo Open took place on March 1, 2026, in cooperation with Sveučilište Hercegovina in Bijakovići, Međugorje. The tournament included U12, U16, and U20 competitions. In addition, the organizer expanded the event beyond tournament games by arranging a special educational program one day earlier. International Masters Ivan Galić and Aleksandar Tomić conducted chess instruction for young participants and then played a large simultaneous exhibition. Therefore, the event combined competition with direct learning opportunities from experienced titled players.

🌍 I. Međugorje Open 2026

In 2026, Šahovski klub Brotnjo launched one of its most ambitious projects to date: the I. Međugorje Open, a multi-day international classical tournament. The event takes place from September 13–19, 2026, at the Congress Hall of Sport Centar CIRCLE in Međugorje. Unlike the club’s earlier one-day Međugorje Open rapid tournaments, this new competition uses a full classical format. Players compete over nine Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. The tournament is registered for FIDE rating and title-norm opportunities. Moreover, the organizer provides live transmission from the first 30 boards. The total prize fund reaches 15,650 KM, with prizes for the leading overall players as well as juniors, cadets, women, veterans, rating categories, and members of ŠK Brotnjo. Ivan Pehar serves as Tournament Director, while International Arbiter Mirza Miralem acts as Chief Arbiter. The event receives patronage and financial support from the Government and Assembly of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton/County.

⚡ Međugorje Open Tournament Tradition

ŠK Brotnjo already had a substantial Međugorje Open tradition before launching the new classical tournament. The earlier Međugorje Open series developed as a major international rapid event. Its ninth edition took place in November 2025 and attracted players from Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad. These tournaments brought grandmasters, international masters, FIDE Masters, strong regional players, juniors, women, and amateur competitors together in Međugorje. The new 2026 classical event represents an expansion of that tradition rather than simply another rapid edition. Consequently, ŠK Brotnjo now offers both the history of its established rapid events and a more ambitious international classical tournament capable of generating FIDE title norms.

🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development

Youth development is one of the strongest elements of Šahovski klub Brotnjo. The club recruits children from primary-school age and provides them with opportunities to learn chess, train regularly, and progress toward official tournaments. Members participate in cadet and junior championships organized by the Chess Federation “Herceg-Bosna”, Bosnia and Herzegovina national championships, regional competitions, international youth tournaments, and the club’s own Brotnjo Open. The results have become increasingly impressive. At the 2026 Herceg-Bosna Cadet and Junior Individual Championships in Neum, Brotnjo players won three championship titles. Ana Ostojić became champion in the Girls U20 category. Ivan Ćorić won the Boys U12 title for the third consecutive year, while Ivan Anđelo Jerković won the Boys U10 championship. Mihaela Buntić also finished second in the Girls U16 competition. As a result, four Brotnjo players secured places at the Bosnia and Herzegovina national championships. These achievements demonstrate the continuity of the club’s junior-development program rather than success from a single generation of players.

🥇 Competitive Success

ŠK Brotnjo members compete regularly throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighboring Croatia. Young players have earned regional championship titles, national championship qualifications, podium finishes, and victories at international junior tournaments. The women’s team has also enjoyed significant success. At the 2026 Chess Federation “Herceg-Bosna” Women’s Cup, the club finished second in the team competition. Meanwhile, players such as Ivan Ćorić, Ivan Anđelo Jerković, Ana Ostojić, Mihaela Buntić, Stipe Čuvalo, and other juniors continue to represent the club in important events. This combination of junior development and regular competitive experience has helped establish Brotnjo as an important chess center in Herzegovina.

🏠 Club Development

Šahovski klub Brotnjo was formally established on March 13, 2008. For many years, the organization worked with the support of local institutions, parishes, sponsors, volunteers, and friends of the club. Ivan Grgić, who helped initiate the club’s creation, later received recognition as an honorary member. A major infrastructure milestone came in May 2022. With support from friends and donors, the club completed and officially opened dedicated chess premises within the Gradski stadion Bare complex in Čitluk. The new facilities gave players a permanent location for training, club meetings, chess education, and smaller competitions. Since then, the organization has continued to expand its tournament calendar. In 2026, its activities range from grassroots youth instruction and the Brotnjo Open to a seven-day international FIDE-rated classical tournament in Međugorje.

🤝 Community and Regional Cooperation

The club maintains strong links with the wider Čitluk and Međugorje community. Its projects have received support from Općina Čitluk, Sportski savez Brotnjo, Herzegovina-Neretva Canton/County institutions, educational organizations, local businesses, sponsors, and individual donors. Cooperation with Sveučilište Hercegovina has been particularly useful for the Brotnjo Open and its associated chess-education activities. Furthermore, the club works within the Chess Federation “Herceg-Bosna” system and regularly sends players to federation championships. This combination of local support, federation competition, and international tournament organization gives ŠK Brotnjo an increasingly important role in chess development across western Herzegovina.
