West Singhbhum District Chess Association (WSDCA) is the district chess organization based in Chaibasa, Jharkhand, India. It promotes competitive chess across West Singhbhum through FIDE-rated tournaments, district championships, rapid events, youth competitions, and player-development activities. Its major tournaments are conducted within the wider structure of the All Jharkhand Chess Association and the All India Chess Federation. The association has developed Chaibasa into an active tournament center in Jharkhand. Recent events have attracted players from several Indian states, including Grandmasters and International Masters. The 2025 Rungta Cement Rating Open brought 340 players to Chaibasa, while the 2026 Navin Kumar Sinha Memorial Rapid attracted 277 participants. Mukund Rungta is the current President, while Basant Khandelwal serves as General Secretary and is the association’s principal tournament contact. Khandelwal is directly involved in organizing WSDCA’s major events and serves as Tournament Director of the 2nd Rungta Cement International Open in 2026.

🏆 Tournament Activity

WSDCA maintains a substantial calendar of rated and district-level chess events in Chaibasa. One of its established competitions is the Navin Kumar Sinha Memorial International FIDE Rapid Rating Chess Championship. The sixth edition in 2026 was a nine-round rapid tournament and attracted 277 players, including GM Aaryan Varshney and four International Masters. The association also organized the 15th Padmabai Rungta Memorial District Chess Championship from April 3–5, 2026. The competition served as a senior state selection tournament for players from West Singhbhum and was held at Rungta Garden in Chaibasa.

🌍 2nd Rungta Cement International Open 2026

The association’s principal upcoming classical event is the 2nd Rungta Cement International Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament, scheduled for September 30 – October 4, 2026 at Khirwal Banquet Hall in Chaibasa. The tournament consists of nine FIDE-rated classical rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. Basant Khandelwal serves as Tournament Director, with International Arbiter Vishal Kumar Minz as Chief Arbiter. The event continues the Rungta-sponsored tournament series that has become one of WSDCA’s most important projects and regularly attracts competitors from outside Jharkhand.

🎓 Youth and District Chess

Alongside large open tournaments, West Singhbhum District Chess Association supports chess development within the district. Its program includes junior age-group competitions, district championships, school chess, coaching activities, and opportunities for local players to progress toward state and national events. Major WSDCA tournaments regularly include dedicated junior categories, helping young players gain competitive experience while playing alongside stronger rated participants.
