Échiquier Montois is a historic chess club based in Mont-de-Marsan, Landes, France. Founded on November 23, 1965, the association has promoted chess in the city for more than six decades. It welcomes children, beginners, recreational players, experienced club competitors, and tournament players within the same organization. The club operates from the Maison des Associations Joëlle Vincens, 39 Rue Martin Luther King, close to the Mont-de-Marsan media library. Regular activity takes place on Wednesdays and Fridays. Moreover, the venue is accessible to people with reduced mobility and provides a permanent base for instruction, friendly games, internal tournaments, and team matches. Bernard Dubertrand currently serves as President and principal contact. He is also an experienced tournament organizer and arbiter who directs many of the club’s competitions. Under his leadership, Échiquier Montois combines grassroots chess with FFE- and FIDE-rated events, team competition, youth development, women’s chess, and two particularly important annual tournament traditions.

🎄 Open International de Noël de Mont-de-Marsan

The Open International de Noël de Mont-de-Marsan is one of the club’s flagship events. Held during the final days of December, the tournament attracts French and international competitors to Mont-de-Marsan for several days of classical chess. The 23rd edition takes place from December 26–30, 2026, at the Auberge Landaise. Players compete over nine Swiss-system rounds with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The tournament is FIDE rated and offers a €6,000 prize fund, including €1,200 for first place. Additional prizes reward different rating categories and player groups. Furthermore, the organizer provides practical services such as limited shuttle transportation between the railway station, hotels, and playing venue. Selected games are also transmitted online. Bernard Dubertrand serves as the principal organizer, while experienced arbiters manage the competition according to FFE and FIDE regulations.

☀️ Open d’Été de Mont-de-Marsan

Échiquier Montois also organizes its established Open d’Été – Summer Open. The 21st Open Rapide de Mont-de-Marsan took place on June 21, 2026, continuing a tournament tradition that has become an important part of the club’s annual calendar. The Summer Open gives regional players an opportunity to compete in rapid chess at the end of the regular club season. It complements the classical Christmas Open and creates a second major annual meeting point for players from Mont-de-Marsan and the wider Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. By maintaining both rapid and classical tournament traditions, the club provides competitive opportunities across different formats and levels of commitment.

♜ Team Chess

Team competition forms a major part of Échiquier Montois. During the 2025–26 season, the club’s leading adult team competed in Nationale 4. Fifteen different players represented the team, which finished fourth in its group. The club also enters teams in regional competitions. Consequently, members who are not yet ready for national-level chess can gain experience through lower divisions before progressing toward stronger opposition. Women’s team chess is another notable strength. Échiquier Montois currently competes in Nationale 2 Féminine, demonstrating a level of organized women’s participation that has also earned the club the FFE Label Féminin. Junior players likewise participate in regional team competition, creating a pathway from training sessions into formal match play.

🎓 Youth Chess and Beginners

Youth and beginner development are central to the club’s weekly activity. The club welcomes young players and beginners on both Wednesdays and Fridays. This regular schedule allows newcomers to learn the rules, basic tactics, strategy, and tournament etiquette while gradually becoming comfortable with over-the-board competition. More experienced juniors can then progress toward regional and Nouvelle-Aquitaine championships. In February 2026, Échiquier Montois players participated in the Aquitaine Youth Championships, covering age groups from U8 through U18–U20. The club also has a history of organizing dedicated junior rapid events in Mont-de-Marsan. Therefore, young players can develop through a combination of lessons, internal games, team competition, and external championships.

👩 Women’s Chess

Échiquier Montois holds the FFE Label Féminin, which recognizes clubs actively supporting the participation and development of women and girls in chess. The club currently competes in the Nationale 2 Féminine team championship. This activity places women’s chess within the normal competitive structure of the organization rather than treating it as an occasional side project. Moreover, major club tournaments include dedicated women’s prizes alongside general and rating-category awards.

🏠 Internal Club Competitions

Members have regular opportunities to play rated chess without leaving Mont-de-Marsan. In 2026, the club organized its internal championship across seven rounds between April and June. The games used a classical time control of 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move and were submitted for FIDE rating. Bernard Dubertrand served as organizer and arbiter. Internal events give club members structured competitive experience between league matches and larger opens. Furthermore, they help developing players become familiar with tournament rules, notation, clocks, pairings, and longer time controls.

🏅 FFE Affiliation and Competitive Structure

Échiquier Montois is an affiliated club of the Fédération Française des Échecs, under club code L40002. The FFE currently records a substantial membership across both Licence A and Licence B categories. L’Échiquier Montois was officially created on November 23, 1965. The association was established to promote chess education while strengthening friendship and solidarity between its members. Over the following decades, the club developed regular competition, youth instruction, team chess, and increasingly ambitious open tournaments. Its Christmas tournament became an established international event, while the Summer Open developed into another recurring competition. At the same time, the club maintained its commitment to local players through weekly activity and internal tournaments. Today, Échiquier Montois combines more than 60 years of chess tradition with FIDE-rated events, national team competition, women’s chess, junior development, and an active year-round club program.
