Zürcher Weihnachtsopen is the organizing committee behind one of Switzerland’s longest-running international chess tournaments. Based in Zürich, Switzerland, the organization stages its traditional year-end chess festival every December between Christmas and New Year. The tournament began in 1977 and has developed into an established meeting point for Swiss and international chess players. Moreover, the event combines strong master-level competition with an accessible tournament for club players. Grandmasters, international masters, juniors, amateurs, seniors, and players from numerous federations regularly take part. Thomas Brand currently leads the organizing committee and serves as the principal tournament contact. He is responsible for tournament communication, registration, coordination, and the event’s continuing development. Under the current organizational structure, Zürcher Weihnachtsopen maintains the traditional format while also providing live boards, side tournaments, substantial prizes, and a final banquet.

🏆 Zürcher Weihnachtsopen

The Zürcher Weihnachtsopen has taken place annually since 1977 and reaches its landmark 50th edition in 2026. The festival traditionally runs from December 26–30. Its main program consists of two seven-round classical tournaments:

• Meisterturnier – primarily for players rated 2000 Elo or higher
• Allgemeines Turnier – primarily for players up to 2050 Swiss Elo

Both sections use the Swiss System and receive FIDE, Swiss national, and German DWZ rating. Therefore, the tournament attracts not only Swiss competitors but also a substantial number of players from Germany and other European countries. In addition, the festival includes a blitz tournament and a hobby rapid tournament. The organizer also concludes the event with a traditional banquet and prize ceremony.

⭐ International Chess Tradition

Over nearly five decades, the Zürcher Weihnachtsopen has attracted an impressive list of international players. Past champions include Gyula Sax, Stefan Kindermann, Vadim Milov, Vladimir Tukmakov, Yannick Pelletier, Georg Meier, Radosław Wojtaszek, Arkadij Naiditsch, Nijat Abasov, Christian Bauer, Haik Martirosyan, Krishnan Sasikiran, and Sergey Fedorchuk. Several leading players have won the tournament more than once. Most notably, Vladimir Tukmakov and Josef Klinger each won four editions, while Swiss Grandmaster Yannick Pelletier has also achieved multiple victories. This history gives the event a distinctive position in Swiss chess. At the same time, the Allgemeines Turnier ensures that the festival remains accessible to ordinary club players rather than becoming an exclusively elite competition.

🎄 50th Zürcher Weihnachtsopen 2026

The 50th Zürcher Weihnachtsopen takes place from December 26–30, 2026, at the Crowne Plaza Zürich. The anniversary edition features seven classical rounds in both principal sections. The first boards are broadcast live, allowing spectators to follow the leading games online. The published prize fund exceeds CHF 18,500. The Meisterturnier offers a CHF 3,000 first prize, while the Allgemeines Turnier offers CHF 1,000 for first place. Furthermore, the organizer awards special prizes for women, seniors over 60, U20 and U16 juniors, and players within selected rating categories. The strongest Swiss player in the Meisterturnier also receives a dedicated prize. The anniversary program additionally includes blitz and hobby rapid competitions on December 28.

🏨 Tournament Venue and Player Experience

The tournament takes place at Crowne Plaza Zürich, Badenerstrasse 420, 8040 Zürich. Using a hotel as the playing venue gives visiting players convenient access to accommodation, tournament halls, meals, and public transport. Moreover, it allows the organizer to keep the main chess activities and final banquet in one location. The playing schedule includes two double-round days. Meanwhile, the side-event day gives participants additional opportunities to play rapid and blitz chess. This format creates a complete year-end chess festival rather than only a classical open. Players can combine serious rated competition with faster chess, social activities, and the traditional closing banquet.

📜 History and Organization

The first Zürcher Weihnachtsopen took place in 1977. Yugoslav player Radovan Govedarica won the inaugural edition. Participation grew quickly during the following years. The tournament attracted hundreds of players in some early editions and established a reputation as a strong international event during the European holiday period. For many years, Georg Kradolfer played a central role in organizing the tournament. Following the 40th edition, responsibility passed to Thomas Brand, who continues to lead the organizing committee today. The event also demonstrated continuity during the COVID-19 period. In 2020, when normal over-the-board competition was severely restricted, the tournament continued in an online format. Normal over-the-board editions subsequently returned to Zürich. The 49th edition took place in December 2025, while the historic 50th tournament follows in 2026. Nearly five decades after its creation, Zürcher Weihnachtsopen therefore remains one of Switzerland’s most recognizable traditional open chess tournaments.
