♟️ About Schachbund Nordrhein-Westfalen e.V.

Schachbund Nordrhein-Westfalen e.V. (Schachbund NRW) is the state chess federation for North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and one of the largest regional associations within the Deutscher Schachbund. As of January 1, 2026, its structure represented 18,887 members. The federation currently encompasses approximately 407 chess clubs, organized through six regional associations and 29 chess districts. Its administrative office is located in Duisburg. Schachbund NRW governs and coordinates a wide range of organized chess activity. Its responsibilities include the Oberliga NRW, NRW-Liga and NRW-Klasse team championships, the state team cup, individual rapid and blitz championships, women’s chess, senior chess, rating administration, tournament regulations, club services, and competitive development. Youth activity is organized through Schachjugend Nordrhein-Westfalen, which operates within the federation structure and serves approximately 4,700 young members. Ralf Chadt-Rausch is the current President of Schachbund Nordrhein-Westfalen and has held the position since February 14, 2021. Olaf Winterwerb serves as Vice President for Finance, while Andreas Jagodzinsky is Vice President for Performance and Grassroots Chess. Frank Strozewski is Tournament Director and manages many of the federation’s principal competitions. Following an active 2025–2026 season, the federation is now preparing the 2026–2027 league program and a renewed series of NRW senior championships.

🏛️ Organization and Regional Structure

Schachbund NRW connects chess activity across Germany’s most populous federal state. Its six member associations are the Schachverband Ruhrgebiet, Schachverband Mittelrhein, Schachverband Münsterland, Niederrheinischer Schachverband 1901, Schachverband Ostwestfalen-Lippe, and Schachverband Südwestfalen. These organizations are further divided into 29 chess districts. Consequently, the federation provides a common competitive and administrative framework for hundreds of clubs ranging from small community organizations to teams competing in Germany’s national leagues. The federation is a member of both the Deutscher Schachbund and the Landessportbund Nordrhein-Westfalen. Its modern postwar organizational history is documented through NRW chess congresses from 1946 onward. Ralf Chadt-Rausch became President in 2021, succeeding Ralf Niederhäuser.

♜ Team Chess and State Competitions

Team chess forms one of the federation’s largest areas of responsibility. Schachbund NRW directly administers the Oberliga NRW, two NRW-Liga groups, and four NRW-Klasse groups, creating the link between regional association leagues and the German national league system. The 2025–2026 Oberliga NRW was won by Bochumer SV, which completed an exceptional season and earned promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. The new 2026–2027 Oberliga season begins on September 12–13, while NRW-Liga competition starts on September 13 and the NRW-Klasse follows on September 20. Cup chess also remains important. In July 2026, SV Erkenschwick won the NRW Viererpokal for the third consecutive year. The final against SV Mülheim-Nord ended 2–2, with Erkenschwick retaining the title through the Berliner Wertung tiebreak.

🏆 Individual, Rapid and Blitz Chess

Schachbund NRW organizes state championships across several formats and player groups. The NRW-Cup / NRW Rapid Individual Championship 2026 took place on July 5 in Oer-Erkenschwick and attracted 206 players across eight competition groups. Tom Rebentisch became NRW Rapid Champion in the main classification, while Inna Gaponenko won the women’s championship with 6.5 points from seven games. Ihor Diduh produced a perfect 7/7 to win the senior title. The federation also administers NRW individual and team blitz championships and uses a broader qualification system involving selected strong Opens for places in German national individual championships. Women’s chess achieved an important national result in June 2026. The North Rhine-Westphalia women’s team finished second at the German State Federation Women’s Team Championship in Braunfels, behind Saxony-Anhalt.

🎓 Youth, Development and Club Support

Approximately 4,700 young players belong to clubs within Schachbund NRW. Youth competitions and development programs operate through Schachjugend Nordrhein-Westfalen, which maintains its own organizational structure within the federation. The wider federation also supports trainer education, performance development, arbiters, rating administration, club management, and grassroots projects. Moreover, it provides regulations, competition schedules, administrative guidance, safeguarding resources, and practical support for its hundreds of member clubs. The federation promotes chess beyond conventional tournament settings as well. In 2026, it supported projects such as Faszination Schach, university chess activities, women’s programs, and initiatives aimed at bringing new players into clubs.

👑 Senior Chess in 2026

Schachbund NRW is rebuilding a comprehensive senior championship program in 2026 after several years in which suitable tournament venues were difficult to secure. The NRW Senior Rapid Championship is scheduled for September 26–27, 2026. Later in the year, the Open NRW Senior Blitz Championship will take place on December 5. The principal event is the Open NRW Senior Individual Chess Championship, scheduled from December 6–12, 2026 at Haus Haard in Oer-Erkenschwick. The tournament consists of nine classical Swiss-system rounds and is submitted for FIDE rating. Separate 50+ and 65+ classifications are planned according to the published regulations. Frank Strozewski serves as Tournament Director and manages registration. Together, these competitions restore a full rapid, blitz, and classical championship structure for senior players in North Rhine-Westphalia.
