♟️ About Landesschachverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V.

Landesschachverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V. (LSV M-V) is the regional chess federation for the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It represents organized chess clubs across the state and forms part of the structure of the Deutscher Schachbund. The federation coordinates state-level competitions, club chess, player administration, training, senior chess, youth development, school chess, and other chess programs throughout Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The federation runs an extensive competitive program that includes the Verbandsliga, regional Landesliga divisions, individual and team championships, cup competitions, rapid and blitz events, and senior championships. Meanwhile, Schachjugend Mecklenburg-Vorpommern manages a substantial youth program with state youth championships, training activities, school chess, girls’ chess initiatives, and participation in national youth competitions. The federation also maintains a detailed tournament calendar connecting players with club tournaments and open events across the region. Niklas Rickmann currently serves as President. He was elected again at the federation’s membership meeting on June 28, 2026, together with Vice Presidents Arne Schmidt and Ulrich Hausmann. During 2026, the federation has been active in expanding performance chess, coach education, school chess, girls’ and women’s chess, youth development, and tournament organization. Major projects include the Frauen- und Mädchenschachmasters, the Juniorteam and its Benefiz-Open, as well as the 26th Open Senior Individual Chess Championship scheduled for November and December 2026.

📜 History and Development

The present Landesschachverband Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was established in 1990 during the restructuring of organized chess following German reunification. It brought chess activity from Mecklenburg, Vorpommern, and Mecklenburg-Strelitz together within one state federation. The organization celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2020. Since its creation, the federation has developed a broad structure covering competitive chess, club administration, youth chess, training, ratings, senior chess, and state championships. Niklas Rickmann has played a particularly prominent role in its modern history. He previously served as President from 2007 to 2016 and later returned to the presidency. The June 2026 elections confirmed him for the new leadership term. Arne Schmidt and Ulrich Hausmann serve as Vice Presidents, while Michael Ehlers continues as Landesspielleiter and Robert Jänsch as Treasurer.

♜ State and Team Competitions

LSV M-V oversees the principal league structure for clubs in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. During the 2025–2026 season, competitions included the Verbandsliga and the Landesliga East and West divisions. SAV Torgelow I won the 2025–2026 Verbandsliga championship and subsequently qualified for the Oberliga. The federation also organizes state championships in several formats. The Landesmannschaftsmeisterschaft im Blitzschach took place in Rostock on March 15, 2026, with eight teams competing over 14 rounds. SF Schwerin I won the championship ahead of Think Rochade – SC HRO I and SSC Rostock 07 I. Senior chess is another established part of the federation’s program. The 28th Landeseinzelmeisterschaft for seniors was held in March 2026, while LSV M-V also operates its Seniorenmannschaftsmeisterschaft.

🎓 Youth, Training and Chess Development

Youth activity is coordinated closely with Schachjugend Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Its program includes state youth individual championships, team competitions, training camps, national championship participation, and initiatives designed to introduce more children to organized chess. Development projects received additional attention in 2026. Funding supported performance chess, coach education, squad training, school chess, girls’ chess, and the federation’s Juniorteam. The Mädchenschachcamp in Stralsund, held in May 2026, combined chess training with a broader youth program. The federation also continued C-Trainer education through its training department. In addition, the 2026 program introduced the first Frauen- und Mädchenschachmasters, held in Burg Stargard from July 3–5, 2026. These projects form part of a broader effort to strengthen participation among young players and female players throughout Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

🏆 Tournament Activity and Senior Championship

The federation maintains an extensive calendar of state championships, club opens, rapid tournaments, youth competitions, and international events. Its 2026 calendar included the International Open in Graal-Müritz, Westmecklenburg-Cup, Ryck-Open in Greifswald, Rostocker Schach-Open, rapid chess events, and the Benefiz-Open of Schachjugend M-V. One of the federation’s major recurring events is the 26th Open Senior Individual Chess Championship Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, scheduled for November 25–December 3, 2026 in Ostseebad Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom. The tournament will be played in the Kaiserbädersaal at Hotel Kaiserhof Heringsdorf. The championship is planned over nine rounds and has no fixed participant limit. The larger venue in Heringsdorf provides considerably more playing capacity for the 2026 edition. The event continues the federation’s long-running program of open senior chess and attracts players from beyond Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

The federation operates through a structured executive board and a network of specialist departments covering competition management, youth chess, training, senior chess, ratings, public relations, finance, and organizational development. The current President is Niklas Rickmann. The federation’s elected leadership also includes Vice Presidents Arne Schmidt and Ulrich Hausmann. Tournament administration is supported by Michael Ehlers, who serves as Landesspielleiter, while Robert Jänsch is responsible for the federation’s finances as Treasurer. This organizational structure allows LSV M-V to coordinate both its official championship system and a wider regional network of chess clubs, organizers, coaches, and volunteers.
