♟️ About Gyulai SE Sakk Szakosztály

Gyulai SE Sakk Szakosztály is the chess section of Gyulai Sportegyesület, based in Gyula, Békés County, Hungary. The section represents the city in competitive team chess and organizes local and international tournaments. Gyulai Sportegyesület is a multi-sport organization, with chess forming one of its established sporting sections. The chess section combines national league participation with an active tournament program. During the 2025–2026 season, Gyulai SE competed in NB II, Tóth László Group, facing teams from southeastern and central Hungary. Tamás Kornél serves as the team leader and is also the principal organizer and public contact for the club’s current chess events. Gyula itself has a rich chess tradition. The city staged an Erkel Ferenc Memorial tournament as early as 1921, honoring the famous Hungarian composer and keen chess player who was born in Gyula. Today, Gyulai SE continues this heritage through the modern Erkel Ferenc Memorial, the long-running Gyöngyösi Lázár Memorial, league competition, and local chess development.

♜ National Team Chess

Gyulai SE is an established participant in Hungary’s national team championship system. During the 2025–2026 season, its leading team competed in the NB II Tóth László Group, providing regular national-level competition for players from Gyula. The club’s playing group combines experienced competitors with developing local players. FIDE Master Albert Fekete has been among the stronger players representing Gyulai SE, while Tamás Kornél combines his organizational responsibilities with active competitive chess.

🏆 Gyöngyösi Lázár Memorial

The Gyöngyösi Lázár Sakk Emlékverseny is one of the chess section’s established annual events. It is organized by Gyulai SE Sakk Szakosztály together with the Körös-vidéki Vízügyi Igazgatóság in memory of Gyöngyösi Lázár, an important figure in chess in Gyula and Békés County. The memorial has been held annually since 1995, apart from the pandemic interruption in 2021. The 2026 edition, held on January 24, attracted 56 players and included separate Open and youth competitions. Tamás Kornél served as the professional organizer and registration contact.

🌍 Erkel Ferenc Memorial

The Erkel Ferenc Memorial is the most historically significant chess tournament associated with Gyula. Its origins date to 1921, and early editions attracted some of Hungary’s strongest players. After periods without the tournament, the tradition was revived and continues today with Gyulai SE closely involved in its organization. The 34th Erkel Ferenc Memorial takes place from October 24–30, 2026 at the Erkel Ferenc High School in Gyula. The tournament includes two competition groups. The main A tournament consists of nine rounds, while Group B is played over seven rounds. Gyulai SE and Tamás Kornél are among the official organizers of the 2026 edition.

🌱 Youth and Community Chess

Youth participation remains an important part of Gyulai SE’s tournament program. The Gyöngyösi Lázár Memorial includes a dedicated junior competition, helping young players gain practical tournament experience alongside the main event. The club also has experience organizing chess activities involving young players from Békés County and neighboring Romania, reflecting Gyula’s close cross-border connections. Through team competition, memorial tournaments, and cooperation with local institutions, Gyulai SE provides regular over-the-board chess opportunities for both established players and the next generation.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Tamás Kornél is the current team leader of Gyulai SE’s chess section and the most appropriate primary Contact Person for the organizer. He is directly involved in the club’s current tournament program and is the published organizer contact for both the 2026 Gyöngyösi Lázár Memorial and the 34th Erkel Ferenc Memorial.
