♟️ About A.S.D. Sulmona Scacchi

A.S.D. Sulmona Scacchi, also known locally as Circolo Scacchistico “Gioacchino Greco”, is a chess club based in Sulmona, Abruzzo, Italy. The organization traces its activity to 1986 and celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026. It promotes competitive and recreational chess across Sulmona and the wider Peligna Valley through Italian Chess Federation membership, rated tournaments, team competition, youth activities, courses, public chess events, and initiatives designed to introduce new players to the game. The club provides chess opportunities for children, adults, experienced competitors, and beginners. Its recent program has included FIDE-rated classical and rapid tournaments, Under-14 competition, public chess activities in Sulmona, and participation in the Campionato Italiano a Squadre. Community outreach is an important part of its identity: the club has organized courses for children and people with disabilities, chess activities in public squares, and events where visitors can learn and play alongside experienced club members. Luzio Antonini is the long-serving President and principal public contact of A.S.D. Sulmona Scacchi. In July 2026, the Italian Chess Federation appointed him Regional Delegate for Abruzzo, while he retained the club presidency. The appointment came during an important year for Sulmona chess: the club also earned a historic promotion to Serie C in the 2026 Italian Team Chess Championship. Its principal upcoming tournament is the 4° Torneo Metamorfosi Città di Sulmona, scheduled for October 23–25, 2026.

📜 Forty Years of Chess in Sulmona

The modern Sulmona chess organization emerged in December 1986, when the Circolo “Gioacchino Greco” was established in the city. The club takes its name from Gioachino Greco, the celebrated 17th-century Italian chess player and writer. Over the following decades, Sulmona Scacchi developed from a local chess circle into an active federation-affiliated organization. Its activities increasingly combined club competition with chess promotion across the city. Recent years have brought particularly visible growth. By 2025, the club reported a community of around 80 participants and members, while its tournament calendar and public initiatives expanded significantly. The 2026 season marked two major milestones: the club’s 40th anniversary and promotion into the national Serie C team structure.

♜ Historic Promotion to Serie C

A.S.D. Sulmona Scacchi achieved one of the most important competitive results in its history during the 2026 Campionato Italiano a Squadre. The Sulmona team secured promotion to Serie C, moving the club into a higher level of Italy’s national team championship system. The achievement was formally recognized by the Municipality of Sulmona during a ceremony at the city council chamber in June 2026. The result represents an important development for chess in the Peligna Valley. It also gives Sulmona players an opportunity to compete against stronger teams within the Italian federation structure during the next season.

🎓 Community and Youth Chess

Sulmona Scacchi has increasingly emphasized bringing chess outside the traditional tournament environment. The club has organized instructional activities for children, newcomers, and players with disabilities, together with chess demonstrations and open events in public spaces. Its 2026 calendar included Primavera 2026, held in Sulmona on April 11. The FIDE Rapid-rated program featured an Open tournament and a separate Under-14 competition, providing a shorter competitive format for both established players and juniors. The club also participates in broader chess initiatives around Sulmona, including school-linked activities and public festivals where chessboards are made available for casual games, instruction, and interaction with experienced players.

🏆 Torneo Metamorfosi Città di Sulmona

The Torneo Metamorfosi Città di Sulmona has become the club’s principal classical tournament. The third edition took place from October 24–26, 2025 at Hotel Sagittario in nearby Bugnara. The FIDE-rated competition used three rating sections and a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The 4th Torneo Metamorfosi Città di Sulmona is scheduled for October 23–25, 2026, again at Hotel Sagittario. The festival will consist of three FIDE/Elo Italia-rated tournaments played over five rounds. Players will receive 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The published total prize fund is €2,280, with separate prizes across the three sections and additional category awards. The Metamorfosi series gives Sulmona Scacchi a regular FIDE-rated classical event capable of attracting players from across Abruzzo and other Italian regions while remaining accessible to club-level competitors.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Luzio Antonini remains President of A.S.D. Sulmona Scacchi and oversees much of its tournament and community activity. His appointment as FSI Regional Delegate for Abruzzo in July 2026 gives him an additional role in coordinating and developing organized chess across the region. The Italian Chess Federation appointment recognized his longstanding work with Sulmona Scacchi and the club’s recent growth. The organization continues to combine local chess development with competitive ambitions, using its Serie C promotion and expanding tournament calendar to strengthen chess in Sulmona and the wider Abruzzo region.
