♟️ About Cercle Royal des Échecs de Charleroi

The Cercle Royal des Échecs de Charleroi (CREC) is a historic chess club based in Charleroi, Wallonia, Belgium. Registered with the Royal Belgian Chess Federation (FRBE/KBSB) under club number 501, it belongs to the Hainaut chess league and the Fédération Échiquéenne Francophone Belge. CREC has played an important role in competitive chess in the Charleroi region for decades and has represented the city in Belgian national and regional team competitions. The club combines league chess with tournament organization and youth competition. Its best-known event is the Tournoi International du Pays de Charleroi (TIPC), a long-running summer open that attracts Belgian and international competitors. CREC also participates with several teams in the Belgian interclub structure. Moreover, it supports junior chess through events connected with the Circuit JEF, the principal youth circuit operated by the French-speaking Belgian federation. Quentin De Heug is the current President of CREC and the principal operational contact for the club. He succeeded the previous leadership before the 2025 Tournoi International du Pays de Charleroi and personally managed registration and tournament organization for that edition. CREC remained active in 2026, with its teams completing the 2025–2026 interclub season and the club organizing a major Circuit JEF tournament on April 5, 2026, which attracted 150 young players.

📜 Club History and Competitive Tradition

CREC has a long-established place in Belgian chess. Over the years, the club has fielded strong teams containing Belgian and international titled players and has competed at high levels of the national interclub system. Its player roster has included Grandmasters and International Masters, reflecting a tradition of competitive ambition alongside local club activity. Recent registered players have included GM Namig Guliyev, GM Normunds Miezis, IM Daniyal Saiboulatov, IM Nicolas Eliet, and IM Nicola Capone. The club has also been associated with several important Belgian chess events. Charleroi hosted the Belgian Championship in 2014, while the Tournoi International du Pays de Charleroi has provided a regular opportunity for club players to compete against titled opposition.

♜ Team Chess

CREC enters several teams across the Belgian interclub system, creating competitive opportunities for players with different ratings and experience levels. During the 2025–2026 National Interclubs, the first team competed in Division 2B. Other CREC teams appeared across lower divisions, demonstrating considerable depth within the club’s competitive structure. In addition, CREC participates in competitions organized by the Fédération Échiquéenne Francophone Belge. During the 2026 FEFB interclub program, CREC Charleroi 1 and CREC Charleroi 2 again appeared in the federation’s team standings. This multi-team structure allows stronger titled and expert players to represent Charleroi at an advanced level while providing regular league chess for developing members.

🎓 Youth Chess

Youth competition remains part of CREC’s current activity. The club participates in the Circuit JEF, a series of rapid tournaments organized throughout French-speaking Belgium for players from the youngest age groups through U20. CREC organized the second stage of the 2026 Circuit JEF on April 5, 2026. The event attracted 150 players, making it one of the largest stages of the circuit during the first half of the year. Young CREC members also compete individually within the series. Therefore, the club’s involvement covers both tournament organization and direct participation by developing players.

🌟 Tournoi International du Pays de Charleroi

The Tournoi International du Pays de Charleroi is CREC’s flagship tournament and one of the organization’s most recognizable projects. The 22nd edition took place from July 26 to August 2, 2025. Because renovation work made the club’s usual Roux venue unavailable, the tournament moved to the Complexe Sportif de l’Asie in Marcinelle. More than 200 players representing 15 nationalities took part. The main tournament used a nine-round Swiss system with a classical time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder and a 30-second increment from move one. The advertised prize fund was €7,500. A separate blitz tournament was also held on July 30 at 3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move. Quentin De Heug served as organizer, while IA Luc Cornet led the arbitration team. The field included strong titled competitors as well as a large contingent of Belgian club players. The 2025 event also marked an important organizational transition for CREC. De Heug was publicly identified during the tournament as the club’s new President, taking responsibility for both the continuation of the international Open and the broader development of the club.

🏛️ Current Activity

CREC entered 2026 with an active competitive roster and several teams participating throughout the Belgian chess system. The club’s federation records continued to include multiple titled players and a broad range of developing competitors. At the same time, its organization of a 150-player JEF tournament demonstrates continued engagement with youth chess. Together with the Tournoi International du Pays de Charleroi, these activities give CREC a dual role: it functions as a competitive chess club while also organizing events serving the wider Belgian chess community.
