Modern editions use a compact weekend format with five Swiss-system rounds. In 2026, players competed in a main tournament and a B tournament for lower-rated participants. Both sections counted for FIDE rating. The time control was 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move, providing full classical tournament conditions within a three-day schedule. Tournament organization has involved several prominent members of the Thun chess community over the years. Martijn Engelberts directed previous editions, while Zbynek Svoboda served as Tournament Director for the 2026 championship.

The 9th Oberländische Meisterschaft 2026 takes place from October 16–18, 2026, at Restaurant Rössli-Thun-Dürrenast. Players compete over five FIDE-rated Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The event also includes rating and category prizes.
