♟️ About Förderverein Schach Gera e.V.

Förderverein Schach Gera e.V. (FSG) is a chess-support association based in Gera, Thuringia, Germany. The current association was founded in December 2025 to strengthen cooperation among Gera’s chess clubs and promote chess throughout the city. Rather than functioning as a conventional competitive chess club, FSG focuses on tournament organization, youth development, school chess, public chess activities, and projects that bring together the city’s clubs, schools, volunteers, and sporting institutions. A major priority is the development of chess among children and young people. The association supports chess in schools, kindergartens, and recreational institutions while also helping educators and young club players. In addition, it organizes the Geraer Stadtjugendspiele, plans school team championships, supports regional team competition, and coordinates major public tournaments. Its flagship project is the annual Albrecht-Beer-Turnier, held together with Gera’s chess clubs, the Stadtsportbund, and the City of Gera. Mike Huster serves as Chairman (Vorsitzender) of Förderverein Schach Gera e.V. He was elected at the association’s founding meeting together with Deputy Chairman Noel Dannenberg and Finance Officer Cindy Loos. During 2026, the new association has already organized the Gera city youth chess games and is preparing the 4th Albrecht-Beer-Turnier, scheduled for October 1–4, 2026, together with the parallel Geraer Jugendopen U14 on October 3–4.

📜 Foundation and Development

The current Förderverein Schach Gera was founded on December 11, 2025. Gera Mayor and Stadtsportbund President Kurt Dannenberg attended the founding meeting and welcomed the renewed cooperation among the city’s chess organizations. At the meeting, Mike Huster of VfL 1990 Gera was elected Chairman. Noel Dannenberg of ESV Gera became Deputy Chairman, while Cindy Loos of VfL 1990 Gera took responsibility for the association’s finances. The association identified several concrete priorities from the beginning. These include the annual organization of the Albrecht-Beer-Turnier, the Gera city youth games, the introduction of Gera school team championships from autumn 2026, and coordination of an adult Kreisliga team competition together with neighboring East Thuringian chess districts. Gera also has a longer history of coordinated chess promotion under the Förderverein Schach Gera name. An earlier association with the same name was active from the beginning of the 2000s and organized the Internationale Geraer Schachtage and numerous youth, rapid, blitz, and community tournaments.

🎓 Youth and School Chess

Youth development is one of FSG’s central areas of activity. On April 1, 2026, the newly established association organized the Geraer Stadtjugendspiele Schach for the first time under its current structure. A total of 104 children and teenagers competed at the Ostschule Gera. Players represented 13 schools and competed in age categories from U8 through U16/U18 over five rounds of rapid chess. The event was supported by members of Gera’s chess clubs, school supervisors, parents, and Ostschule staff. Moreover, only around one-third of the participants were already members of Gera chess clubs, showing the event’s importance as an entry point for children who play chess primarily at school. The association also plans to establish Geraer Schulmeisterschaften for school teams beginning in autumn 2026. This complements its broader objective of expanding chess in schools, kindergartens, and recreational facilities.

🏆 Albrecht-Beer-Turnier Gera

The Albrecht-Beer-Turnier is the association’s principal adult tournament and commemorates Albrecht Beer, whose work as a chess organizer, trainer, arbiter, and promoter played an important role in Gera chess. The 4th Albrecht-Beer-Turnier is scheduled for October 1–4, 2026 at Panndorfhalle Gera. Förderverein Schach Gera e.V. organizes the tournament in cooperation with the Gera chess clubs, while the City of Gera provides patronage. The competition will consist of seven Swiss-system rounds and will count for both FIDE Elo and German DWZ ratings. The time control is 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the remainder, with a 30-second increment from move one. The tournament also incorporates the 2026 Thuringian Individual Championships. Eligible players with an active playing authorization in the Thüringer Schachbund will compete for the titles of Thuringian Individual Champion in the women’s and open categories. The 2026 edition is limited to 160 participants and offers a guaranteed prize fund once the required participation level is reached. The published first prize is €600.

♟️ Geraer Jugendopen U14

Alongside the main tournament, FSG will organize the Geraer Jugendopen U14 from October 3–4, 2026 at Panndorfhalle. The youth tournament is designed for players born in 2012 or later and consists of five Swiss-system rounds. Players are divided into two rating groups to provide more balanced competition. Following the German Chess Federation’s DWZ adjustment in July 2026, the organizing team changed the original rating division from DWZ 1000 to DWZ 1300 for the 2026 event. The Jugendopen has a capacity of 80 participants. Dieter Hilbig serves as Tournament Director, while Förderverein Schach Gera e.V. remains the official organizer together with Gera’s chess clubs.

🤝 Chess Promotion in Gera

Beyond individual tournaments, FSG aims to create a shared organizational platform for chess across Gera. This allows the city’s separate chess clubs to cooperate on projects that would be more difficult to organize individually. The association also intends to make chess more visible in public spaces and support the training of people who can introduce and teach the game in schools and community institutions. Consequently, its program connects club chess, school chess, youth tournaments, city competitions, and major open events. This cooperative model has quickly made Förderverein Schach Gera an important organizational component of the city’s chess activities.
