SC Groß-Zimmern 1921 e.V. is a chess club based in Groß-Zimmern, Hesse, Germany. Founded in 1921, the club has more than a century of local chess history and belongs to the Hessischer Schachverband through Schachbezirk Starkenburg. Its permanent playing venue is the Kulturzentrum Glöckelchen on Angelstraße, where the club holds regular Friday training sessions, internal tournaments, league matches, and youth activities. The club combines regional team competition with youth development, structured training, monthly blitz tournaments, long-time-control club championships, cup chess, and participation in external events. 📜 More Than 100 Years of Chess History

SC Groß-Zimmern was established in 1921. The club’s own historical research shows that approximately 90% of its membership during the 1920s belonged to Groß-Zimmern’s Jewish community. The political persecution of the Nazi period brought this first phase of club life to an end. The organization was dissolved during the early 1930s. A new attempt to establish organized chess followed in 1937, although wartime conditions again stopped regular activity. After World War II, the club was re-established on August 13, 1947, when 25 people attended a new founding meeting. Membership quickly grew to 58. In January 1948, Groß-Zimmern joined clubs from Dieburg, Reinheim, Überau, Groß-Bieberau, and Groß-Umstadt in creating the Schachkreis Dieburg. The club subsequently developed a stable competitive and youth structure. A major boost came during the chess boom surrounding the 1972 Fischer–Spassky World Championship. Groß-Zimmern expanded its youth department, and by the 1980s and early 1990s membership had grown substantially. Its girls’ team won a Hessian championship in 1980.

♜ Team Chess and Club Competition

Team chess remains central to SC Groß-Zimmern. The club currently fields five teams across the Starkenburg league structure. The first team plays in the Starkenburgliga, while the second competes in Bezirksklasse. The third team plays in A-Klasse, and the fourth and fifth teams compete in C-Klasse. This structure gives experienced players, juniors, beginners, and developing members regular opportunities to play official league chess. During the 2025–2026 season, the first team entered the Starkenburgliga as a newly promoted side. By December 2025, it had already secured its primary objective of avoiding relegation and had spent part of the first half of the season near the top of the standings. The club also participates in the Starkenburg four-player cup. In addition, its internal competition program includes a monthly blitz championship and a long-time-control championship played across the season.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

Youth training takes place every Friday from 18:00, followed by the adult club evening from 20:00. The program gives young players a regular environment for learning, tournament preparation, and competitive practice. The club also organizes thematic training evenings approximately once per month. These sessions combine presentations and group work on specific chess topics and provide structured improvement opportunities beyond normal casual play. Young Groß-Zimmern players regularly participate in Starkenburg Jugend Grand Prix events, Hessian youth championships, and other regional tournaments. During the 2025–2026 Jugend Grand Prix season, Lev Cherniavskii and Niclas Wagner were among the leading U20 players representing the club. The club’s five-team structure also helps juniors progress into adult league chess. Several younger members already appear in the first-team lineup, while the dedicated girls’ team creates another route into federation competition.

🏆 2nd Zimmner Jubiläumsopen 2026

The 2nd Zimmner Jubiläumsopen is scheduled from October 1–4, 2026 at the Mehrzweckhalle, Rathausplatz 2, in Groß-Zimmern. The tournament forms part of the municipality’s 750th-anniversary celebrations. Players will contest seven Swiss-system rounds in one open section. The classical time control is 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move, and results will count for both FIDE Elo and German DWZ ratings. The field is limited to 150 players, and more than 115 registrations had already been received by late August 2026. The organizers have announced a total prize fund of €2,550, including €500 for first place together with women’s, senior, junior, and rating-category prizes. Steffen Heß serves as Tournament Director and principal organizer. Fabian Alexander Czappa and IA Holger Bergmann form the published arbiting team. The event revives the tournament concept first used for the club’s 100th anniversary in 2021. Consequently, the 2026 edition connects two milestones: more than a century of organized chess in Groß-Zimmern and the municipality’s 750-year history.
