Stavanger Sjakklubb Ungdom (Stavanger SKU) is an independent youth chess club based in Stavanger, Norway. Founded on January 24, 2011, the association provides organized chess for children and young people up to age 26. It is affiliated with Norges Sjakkforbund (Norwegian Chess Federation) through Rogaland Skolesjakkutvalg and works closely with the adult Stavanger Sjakklubb. At the turn of 2024–2025, Stavanger SKU reported 103 members. The club runs weekly chess activities at several schools and community venues around Stavanger, including Jåtten School, Tjensvoll Bydelshus, Stavanger Kristne Grunnskole, Gausel School, and, from the 2026–2027 season, Hundvåg Bydelshus. Its program combines coaching, beginner-friendly chess, club evenings, training gatherings, social activities, weekend tournaments, and participation in regional and national championships. Moreover, Stavanger SKU arranges group trips to major Norwegian individual and team events, giving young members a pathway from local school chess into broader competitive play. Lasse Østebø Løvik is the current Chairman of Stavanger Sjakklubb Ungdom and the club’s principal contact. He also serves as President of Norges Sjakkforbund, connecting his extensive work in Stavanger youth chess with chess administration at national level. The club has a busy autumn 2026 schedule, including the Stavanger NGP September 2026 from September 25–27 and another Stavanger November GP from November 6–8, both at Tjensvoll Bydelshus.

📜 History and Development

Stavanger has a much longer tradition of organized youth chess than the present association itself. Stavanger SKU states that its youth-chess roots extend back to the 1970s, while organized chess in the city reaches further back into the early 20th century. The modern Stavanger SKU was formally established in 2011 as a self-governing voluntary association with its own board. Its purpose is to provide a stable organization specifically for children and young people while cooperating closely with Norway’s established chess structures. The club has since developed a decentralized model, bringing chess directly into schools and neighborhood community centers rather than relying on one permanent clubhouse. This approach allows Stavanger SKU to reach children in different parts of the city and create an accessible first step into organized chess.

🎓 Youth Chess and Weekly Training

Youth development forms the core of Stavanger SKU’s activity. The club welcomes players from approximately 6 to 26 years old, including complete beginners as well as experienced juniors already competing in rated tournaments. For the new season, weekly activities include Wednesday sessions at Jåtten School and Tjensvoll Bydelshus, Monday chess at Stavanger Kristne Grunnskole, Tuesday sessions at Gausel School, and a new Monday activity at Hundvåg Bydelshus. Board members also participate directly in coaching. Gaute Ljones leads chess activity at Stavanger Kristne Grunnskole, while Jonas Gryte works with the groups at Tjensvoll Bydelshus and Gausel School. The club emphasizes enjoyment, fair play, diversity, development, and community. In addition to weekly sessions, it organizes summer chess, social events, training gatherings, and tournaments throughout the year.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Stavanger SKU regularly organizes weekend competitions while helping its members participate in tournaments elsewhere in Norway. The next major event is the Stavanger NGP September 2026, scheduled for September 25–27, 2026 at Tjensvoll Bydelshus, Morgedalsveien 60, Stavanger. The Norwegian Grand Prix event consists of six Swiss-system rounds. Friday evening features two rapid games at 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment, followed by four classical rounds on Saturday and Sunday at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment. Three rating groups are planned: Group A for players rated 1800 and above, Group B for 1600–1799, and Group C for players below 1600 or unrated. The published main and women’s cash prizes total NOK 18,000, with additional class prizes. The club will then organize the Stavanger November GP from November 6–8, 2026, again at Tjensvoll Bydelshus. Together, these events give Stavanger players repeated opportunities to participate in the Norwegian Grand Prix system without travelling outside the region.

🌱 National Participation and Chess Community

Stavanger SKU encourages young players to move beyond weekly local training and gain experience in regional and national competition. The club organizes joint trips to Norwegian championships and other major events, including both individual and team competitions. This support helps young players experience stronger opposition while developing friendships and a wider connection with the Norwegian chess community. Membership in Stavanger SKU also includes affiliation with Rogaland Skolesjakkutvalg and Norges Sjakkforbund. As a result, young players become part of Norway’s formal chess structure while continuing to train locally. The club is run largely by volunteers, and its board actively encourages parents and other members of the Stavanger community to help develop existing activities or establish new chess groups.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Lasse Østebø Løvik leads Stavanger SKU as Chairman. In addition to his local role, he currently serves as President of the Norwegian Chess Federation, where he chairs the federation’s national board. The current Stavanger SKU board also includes Gaute Ljones and Jonas Gryte, both of whom contribute directly to teaching and club development. The close relationship between Stavanger SKU, the Norwegian Chess Federation, Rogaland’s school-chess organization, local schools, community centers, and Stavanger Sjakklubb allows young players to progress from their first chess sessions toward rated tournaments and national competition.
