♟️ About A.S.D. Scacchi Famiglia Legnanese

A.S.D. Scacchi Famiglia Legnanese is a chess association based in Legnano, Lombardy, Italy. Its chess group was founded in 1982 by Alberto Meraviglia and Giovanni Longo and has been based at the historic Villa Jucker since 1988. After decades under the leadership of Alberto Meraviglia, Denis Soncin took over in 2023 and led a new organizational phase in which the club was formally established as A.S.D. Scacchi Famiglia Legnanese and affiliated with the Federazione Scacchistica Italiana (FSI). The association combines federation-rated tournaments, team chess, youth competition, chess courses, school projects, social tournaments, and community events. Its home at Villa Jucker hosts regular chess activity, while the club also maintains a chess hub in nearby Villa Cortese. The club has a strong competitive tradition: its first team has previously competed for three seasons in Italy’s top Serie A1, while its juniors have won individual and team national titles. In the 2025/2026 school year, its educational program reached more than 300 primary-school children in the Legnano area. Denis Soncin is the current President and principal tournament contact. The association remains highly active in 2026. It organized the Lombardy Regional Youth Championship U18 in May, attracting 199 young players, and continued its recurring FIDE blitz activity at Villa Jucker. Its flagship autumn competition is the 37th San Giorgio su Legnano Scacchi, scheduled for September 25–27, 2026, followed by the Villa Cortese FIDE Blitz Marathon on October 11.

📜 History and Development

The chess section of Famiglia Legnanese was established in 1982 by Alberto Meraviglia and Giovanni Longo. It subsequently developed into one of the established chess organizations in the Legnano area. Since 1988, the club has met at Villa Jucker, the headquarters of the wider Famiglia Legnanese cultural association. Regular club activity traditionally takes place on Friday evenings, while additional chess activity has also been developed in Villa Cortese. A major organizational transition began in 2023, when Denis Soncin succeeded longtime leader Alberto Meraviglia. Under his presidency, the chess group adopted a more formal sporting structure as A.S.D. Scacchi Famiglia Legnanese, strengthening its connection with the Italian Chess Federation and expanding its tournament and educational projects.

🎓 Youth Chess and School Activity

Youth development is a major part of the club’s current strategy. A.S.D. Scacchi Famiglia Legnanese organizes courses for children and adults, competitive junior activities, school projects, and introductory events. During the 2025/2026 school year, the association brought chess directly into primary schools around Legnano. An initial program developed through cooperation with local schools expanded to approximately 300 children, with chess taught during normal school hours. The club also has a strong historical record in junior competition. Its achievements include three Italian youth titles by Simone Pozzari, an Italian U12 Championship title for Riccardo Costalonga, and an Italian U14 Team Championship won by Adrian Di Bartolomeo, Daniele De Martino, Riccardo Soncin, and Lorenzo Zanzottera. In May 2026, the association organized the Lombardy Regional Youth Championship U18 in Villa Cortese. The event attracted 199 young players across age categories from U8 through U18, and the Lombardy Chess Committee specifically recognized the club for its organization.

♜ Team and Competitive Chess

A.S.D. Scacchi Famiglia Legnanese participates actively in Italy’s Campionato Italiano a Squadre (CIS) structure. The club has historically reached Serie A1, Italy’s highest national team division, where its first team competed for three seasons. More recently, it has continued to enter several teams at different competitive levels. The 2026 CIS registrations include multiple Famiglia Legnanese squads, including teams designed to give newer and younger players experience in formal team competition. This structure allows established players, juniors, and developing club members to participate within the same organization. Alongside team chess, the club regularly organizes FIDE-rated classical, rapid, and blitz competitions, as well as internal and social tournaments.

⚡ FIDE Blitz and Local Tournament Activity

The association runs recurring FIDE blitz events from its Villa Jucker headquarters. The Blitz FIDE del Lunedì series provides regular internationally rated short-format competition in Legnano. For example, the June 8, 2026 edition used seven rounds at 5 minutes plus a 3-second increment per move and was submitted for FIDE Blitz rating. The tournament program also extends to nearby Villa Cortese. On October 11, 2026, the association will organize the Villa Cortese FIDE Blitz Marathon, featuring 20 rounds at 5+3. These shorter events complement the club’s classical tournaments and provide members with regular competitive opportunities throughout the year.

🌟 San Giorgio su Legnano Scacchi

The historic San Giorgio su Legnano Scacchi tournament is the club’s flagship event. After its revival under the current leadership, the tournament has again become a regular part of the September chess calendar. The 37th edition is scheduled for September 25–27, 2026 at Centro Parrocchiale in San Giorgio su Legnano. The competition features three FIDE-rated classical sections: Open A for players above 1700, Open B for players over 50 rated below 1900, and Open C for players below 1701. All three competitions use five Swiss-system rounds at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The prize structure includes cash awards across all sections, while reduced entry fees are available for juniors, women, and players over 65. Denis Soncin serves as the main tournament contact, with longtime club figure and co-founder Alberto Meraviglia also involved in event communication.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Denis Soncin has served as President of A.S.D. Scacchi Famiglia Legnanese since 2023. He is also an active chess instructor, player, tournament organizer, and member of the Lombardy regional chess structure. His leadership has emphasized both continuity and expansion. The club continues its long competitive tradition while increasing its work with schools, juniors, FIDE-rated events, community chess, and regional championships. The association remains closely connected with the wider Famiglia Legnanese, whose Villa Jucker headquarters provide the club with a distinctive permanent home in central Legnano.
