TSV Nittenau Schachabteilung is the chess division of TSV Nittenau 1904 e.V., based in Nittenau, Bavaria, Germany. Organized chess activity in the town began in 1978, when Hans Seigner and Dr. Vladimir Vlcek established regular chess meetings through the local Volksbildungswerk. In 1985, the group formally joined TSV Nittenau as the sports club’s 12th division. The chess section operates from the TSV-Sportheim on Fischbacher Straße, where it maintains its permanent chess room. The division combines regional team competition with youth chess, recreational play, internal championships, and open tournaments. Its members compete within the Schachverband Oberpfalz and the Bavarian chess structure, while the club also organizes its long-running Offene Nittenauer Stadtmeisterschaft. In addition, TSV Nittenau promotes accessible community chess through school activities, municipal events, holiday programs, and open Friday chess evenings for beginners and experienced players. Fabian Kammer is the current Head of the Chess Division and also serves as Playing Director. The leadership team was unanimously confirmed at the division’s General Assembly on July 11, 2026. Manfred Preischl remains Deputy Head, Thomas Kammer serves as Youth Director, Stefan Weber manages finances and public relations, and Stefan Forster is Secretary. The division’s principal upcoming event is the 26. offene Nittenauer Stadtmeisterschaft, scheduled for September 18–20, 2026.

📜 History and Development

The roots of organized chess in Nittenau go back to 1978. Hans Seigner and Dr. Vladimir Vlcek brought together a group of local chess enthusiasts who met every two weeks through the Volksbildungswerk. The group also organized early tournaments and simultaneous exhibitions. In 1985, these activities developed into an official chess division within TSV Nittenau. Hans Seigner became the first Head of the division, with Johann Weiherer as his deputy. Manfred Preischl was among the founding members. Competitive development followed quickly. During the 1985–1986 season, Nittenau entered its first team in the Kreisliga I Bayerwald and immediately finished runner-up. One year later, the team won the league and earned promotion to Bezirksliga Nord. The following decades brought regional league participation, youth successes, Upper Palatinate championship results, and the development of a substantial tournament tradition. Hans Seigner remained Head of the division until 1996 and later became Honorary Head in recognition of his role in establishing organized chess in Nittenau.

♜ Team Chess and Club Competition

TSV Nittenau continues to participate in official team competition in the Upper Palatinate. During the 2025–2026 season, the first team competed in the Bezirksliga Süd. The registered squad included Michael Plank, Fabian Kammer, Thomas Kammer, Stefan Weber, Philipp Kammer, Stefan Forster, Misha Antonovych, Bernd Moore, Franz Beer, Manfred Preischl, Marion Kammer, and several additional players. Home matches take place in the chess room on the second floor of the TSV-Sportheim. Internal competition also remains part of the annual program. On July 11, 2026, the division held its club championship as a seven-round rapid round-robin tournament at 15 minutes + 5 seconds per move. Stefan Forster won the 2026 club championship with 6.5 points from seven games. Thomas Kammer finished second with 5.5 points, while Fabian Kammer took third place with five points.

🎓 Youth and Community Chess

TSV Nittenau has a long record of youth participation in Upper Palatinate tournaments and junior championships. In 2026, the division adjusted its weekly program to make chess more accessible to newcomers. Children up to approximately 12 years old can attend the Friday “Schach entdecken” session from 17:30, while the open chess evening for teenagers and adults begins at 18:45. The emphasis is on playing, learning, and enjoying chess rather than requiring previous tournament experience. The chess division also participates actively in community life in Nittenau. During 2026, members presented chess at the local primary and middle school festival, participated in the Nittenau Volksfest parade, and organized a chess stand during the municipal swimming-pool Beachparty. These activities complement the division’s formal competitions. Therefore, TSV Nittenau provides both a regional competitive environment and an accessible entry point for people who want to discover chess without immediately joining tournament play.

🏆 26. offene Nittenauer Stadtmeisterschaft 2026

The 26. offene Nittenauer Stadtmeisterschaft is scheduled for September 18–20, 2026 at Hotel-Gaststätte Ludwig Pirzer in Nittenau. The tournament continues one of the division’s most established annual traditions. Players will contest five Swiss-system rounds at a classical Fischer time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move. The tournament will be evaluated for DWZ, and participation is limited to 70 players. The organizers have announced a total prize fund of €1,000. First prize is €250, followed by €200 for second place and €150 for third. Additional prizes cover juniors, seniors, several DWZ categories, and four-player teams. Fabian Kammer is the principal organizational contact for the tournament, with Manfred Preischl and Thomas Kammer also listed for tournament inquiries. The competition remains an important regional event for players from Bavaria and neighboring chess regions.
