Levanger Sjakklubb is a chess club based in Levanger, Trøndelag, Norway, with a documented history dating to October 1, 1924. The club celebrated its centenary in 2024 and continues to provide organized chess for players in Levanger and the surrounding region. Its activities include club championships, classical and rapid chess, team competition, Norges Grand Prix events, and regular opportunities for local players to participate in rated tournament chess. In addition, the club organizes the recurring Levanger Grand Prix, bringing players from other Trøndelag clubs and elsewhere in Norway to the town for a full weekend of classical chess. Terje Lund is the current Chairman of Levanger Sjakklubb and its principal public contact. He is a long-serving player, organizer, and chess administrator with experience at both regional and national level. In 2026, he continues to direct the club’s tournament activity. 📜 More Than a Century of Chess

Levanger Sjakklubb was founded on October 1, 1924. During the club’s 100th-anniversary celebrations, Terje Lund described the founders as a small group of local chess enthusiasts who established an organized meeting place for chess in Levanger. The club marked the centenary with the Levanger Grand Prix 2024, held from September 14–16. The tournament attracted 56 players and also served as the Trøndelag regional championship. Martin Øksendal of Hell Sjakklubb won Group A with 4.5/5. Levanger’s Grand Prix tradition extends well beyond the centenary tournament. Norwegian chess archives contain Levanger Grand Prix events from the 1980s and 1990s, demonstrating the club’s long involvement with open tournament organization.

Levanger achieved one of its strongest recent team results during the 2024–2025 Midtnorgeserien. Its first team won Division 1 Trøndelag with nine match points, finishing ahead of Hell 2, Trondheim 1, Hell 3, NTNUI 1, and Trondheim 2. That victory qualified Levanger for the Midtnorgeserien final against Kristiansund Sjakklubb, winner of the Møre og Romsdal section. Kristiansund won the final, while Levanger completed the season as Trøndelag champion. The club returned to the top Trøndelag division in 2025–2026. However, it did not retain the title; NTNUI Sjakk won the division in February 2026, with Hell finishing level on match points. Levanger remained part of the region’s top team competition and continued to provide regular league experience for its players.

🏆 Club Tournaments

Levanger maintains tournament activity outside the regional league. The Levanger Klubbmesterskap langsjakk 2026 ran during April and involved 19 players, including 15 rated participants representing Levanger. On May 7, 2026, the club held its rapid championship. Twelve players participated, and Terje Lund won with a perfect 5/5. These internal competitions complement the club’s larger weekend events. Therefore, members have opportunities to play both regular club chess and tournaments against visiting competitors.

🌟 Levanger Grand Prix 2026

The Levanger Grand Prix 2026 is scheduled for September 11–13, 2026 at Levanger videregående skole, Kirkegata 1. Players will compete over five classical Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The event is divided into two rating groups. Group A is intended primarily for players rated above 1800, while Group B accommodates players below that level; players rated at least 1700 may choose the higher group. The main announced prizes are NOK 6,000 for first place, NOK 3,000 for second, and NOK 1,500 for third, with additional class prizes. The tournament runs from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon and forms part of Norway’s Grand Prix tournament structure. Terje Lund handles tournament registrations and player enquiries, continuing his central role in both the competitive and organizational life of Levanger Sjakklubb.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Terje Lund is the current Chairman of Levanger Sjakklubb. Current Norwegian organizational records also identify Adrian Gran and Nina Hagesæther as board members. Lund has been associated with Levanger chess for decades and remains active as a competitive player. His broader chess background includes administrative roles beyond the club, while his continuing work in Levanger covers team chess, club championships, and the annual Grand Prix.
