♟️ About A.D. Oristano Scacchi

A.D. Oristano Scacchi is a long-established chess club based in Oristano, Sardinia, Italy. Founded in 1988 by a group of local chess enthusiasts led by first President Roberto Grillo, the organization has developed into an important center for competitive, educational, and recreational chess in central-western Sardinia. The club welcomes children, adults, beginners, and experienced players. Its regular activities take place at Is Domus, Via Diego Contini 83, where members meet for chess courses, training, free play, and tournaments. The association has also maintained a strong connection with schools since 2003, introducing chess to students at different educational levels. Tournament organization is a particularly important part of the club’s current activity. In 2026, A.D. Oristano Scacchi organized the Sardinia Regional Championship, the regional U18 championship, and the VI Coppa Città di Oristano. Andrea Sini is the current President, while Enrico Giordano is one of the club’s principal organizers and the main public contact for its 2026 tournaments.

📜 History and Development

A.D. Oristano Scacchi has been active for nearly four decades. Already in 1993 and 1994, the club organized international Open tournaments in Oristano that attracted experienced players and titled competitors. These events helped strengthen competitive chess in the city and provided Sardinian players with opportunities to face stronger opposition. Education later became another major focus. Since 2003, club members have worked with local schools, while young players have progressed from introductory lessons to provincial, regional, and national competition.

🎓 Youth and School Chess

Youth development remains an important part of the organization’s mission. The club offers regular chess courses and has a long history of cooperation with elementary, middle, and secondary schools. Its programs introduce young people to chess while helping more ambitious juniors progress toward federation competition. In June 2026, A.D. Oristano Scacchi organized the Sardinia Regional U18 Championship in cooperation with the regional chess committee. The FIDE/FSI-rated competition served as part of the qualification pathway toward the Italian Youth Championships.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Oristano Scacchi organizes several important tournaments during the year. From May 30 to June 2, 2026, the club hosted the Sardinia Regional Absolute Championship at its Via Diego Contini venue. The event consisted of seven FIDE-rated classical rounds and formed part of the Italian Individual Championship structure. Another flagship event is the Coppa Città di Oristano. The 6th edition takes place from September 11–13, 2026, with two rating-based sections and seven FIDE-rated classical rounds. The competition has developed into an established annual tournament, with previous winners including IM Pierluigi Piscopo and several strong Sardinian and international players.

🤝 Club Life

The club provides regular opportunities for players who prefer recreational chess as well as those preparing for tournaments. Free-play sessions are normally held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, while chess courses take place during the week. This combination creates an accessible environment where beginners can learn the game and stronger players can train for competitive events. Its central location in Oristano also makes the club an important meeting point for the wider chess community in the province.
