Lia Schach Gherdëina - Schachclub Gröden - Associazione Dilettantistica Scacchi Gardena

♟️ Club Identity

Lia Schach Gherdëina – Schachclub Gröden – Associazione Dilettantistica Scacchi Gardena is a chess club in Val Gardena, South Tyrol, Italy. The club began in 1959 as Schachclub St. Ulrich and later adopted the Schachclub Gröden name in 1984. It represents a multilingual chess community in Ortisei, Santa Cristina, Selva, and the wider Ladin valley. The club’s identity connects local chess with South Tyrolean culture, regional team competition, and international tournament activity. Its regular playing base is at Haus der Kultur in Ortisei, where members meet for club chess, youth sessions, and team activity. In addition, the club maintains an active website with news, results, member information, tournament links, and historical records. This makes it a useful chess reference point for players in Val Gardena and across South Tyrol.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Schachclub Gröden organizes the International Chess Festival “ad Gredine” in Ortisei, one of the most visible international chess events in South Tyrol. The 2026 edition takes place from September 11 to 13 at the Luis Trenker Cultural Centre in Ortisei. It marks the fifth edition after earlier tournaments in 2012, 2013, 2016, and 2018. The festival has attracted players from more than 20 countries and four continents, which gives local players rare access to a strong international field. The name “ad Gredine” refers to an early historical form connected with the name Gardena, so the tournament also highlights the valley’s Ladin heritage. Beyond this festival, the club takes part in South Tyrolean team chess and has a long record in regional league competition, cup events, rapid tournaments, and individual championships.

🌱 Youth Chess and Community Activity

Schachclub Gröden supports youth chess and community chess through regular student sessions, club training, and long-term player development. The club’s youth work has played a major role in its history, including strong results in South Tyrolean youth team championships and several Italian youth championship titles. Its Friday schedule includes chess activity for students before the evening club session, which gives young players a clear path into the club environment. In addition, the club has hosted major chess moments in Val Gardena, including simultaneous exhibitions, training courses, anniversary events, and international festival editions. Players from the club have also represented South Tyrolean chess in national and international settings. As a result, Schachclub Gröden combines local tradition, junior development, team competition, and international chess culture in one active organizer profile.
